Been riding for about 3 years now, exclusively on cruisers, but i'm graduating in a month and want to invest in something i can keep around for more than a year or two and still be able to enjoy it and not wish for more all the time. I like the look of the "naked" bikes, but a few searches for some ducatis didn't really find anything in my price range. I'm looking for something fairly new (last 5 or so years) with lower miles, what would you guys recommend?

late 90's, early 00's sv650 can be had for 3500. They are nice bikes. You can always find a layed down r6 or cbr600 and turn it into a street fighter for under 4 grand. Someone on ebay was selling a new 05 cbr600rr wrecked for like 2-3 grand. Would be an awesome streetfighter bike.

I'm loving my r6 and it was under 4k. You should be able to find some gsxrs, cbrs and zx6rs in your price range, especially no that the season is coming to an end.

There's a Duc for you. They're slightly more maintenance intensive than the SV650, but you pay to play. Even though the Monster is a 900, I'm willing to bet the SV650 is close to or as quick as it with the newer technology. The Monster is only a better bike in the sense of the intangibles (ie its an italian bike, italian passion, soul, yadda yadda). Buying the SV is like buying an S7 TT over an Enzo (or F50 or whatever Italian super car you want to insert here). The S7 is going to be faster, but with the Ferrari you are getting a rich heritage and you become part of a community of passionate owners thats dates back over half a century. In the last 15 years, Ducati has won 13 manufacturers titles in FIM World Superbike and in the last 16 years, 11 World Champions have been aboard Ducatis. The other advantage is that you rarely ever see your bike looking back at you (with the exception of State, where there are atleast 4 Monsters, 3 of them being of the Dark variety). I've had one other Ducati superbike ever go by me the other way and we're good friends now. Its a small and close knit community. You can look at stats till the numbers run together, but the only way you will know what bike is for you is by getting on and riding them. Good luck. i rode a jap bike and would rather have ridden a duc. i like how they are more rare and im a poser
