I'm having some serious problems with my signal lights. Whenever i turn my flashers on all of my lights work except for the one back rear light. Whenever i turn the flashers off and try to use the signal lights reguarly they do not work. whenever i turn my headlights on, both of the signals on my display light up. If i turn the right on, the right light goes out, but the light doesnt blink. THe light is on from the outside, but its not flashing on the display or the bulb. Whenever i turn the left signal light on nothing happens at all. What could be the problem. Im pretty sure that i've changed the flasher a while ago, but it still hasnt fixed the problem.

It sounds like there are some bulbs burned out.

yep, if you have one or more bulbs out in the turn signal circuits, they'll do crazy ass shit like that. Check 'em all, and you might want to check any related fuses.

suspect a faulty bulb, even if it appears to be working normally, remove it and look closely at the fillament(s)

ok, two things to ponder:

1) exactly what relay would cause this problem?

2) what if his peice of shit has 2 faulty bulbs?

sorry for the typo, whenever i turn the left left signal light on nothing happens at all and its not the right rear bulb thats out, its the left on if your looking from behind the car. This is really killing me, becuase i cant get my car inspected until i get this fixed and my inspection was up in july.

i plan on replacing it within the next couple of days..i just noticed that the bulb was out a couple of days ago when i was messing around with my flashers..but it just seems like too complicated a problem for it just to be one bulb

if you know that you dont really know much about cars, then why...

let me put it this way, it might make more sense:

it just seems like too complicated a problem for YOU to diagnose, and its wayyy to complicated for an uber novice like yourself to throw likely guesses at.

NOW go back to my first suggestion, and do like I said. In the end, even if you dont find a fault, it was free and you would have visually checked all your bulbs. Then, armed with slightly more knowledge than before, you might be able to make a guess or two.

even though i dont know much about cars doesnt mean that i'm not willing to learn...being that i dont konw much about cars i did put my own radiator in and its working fine. I saw that you had a suggestion about what the problem might be and i never said you were wrong. I'm the type of person that asks around from mechanics, friends, internet or whatever to try to tsee whats wrong..i dont assume things myself unless i know its right...so chill the fuck out and fuck off seriously.

Burned out bulbs, or a bad ground and a backfeed.

Listen, you uppity black terrapin fuck- if you are indeed "willing to learn" sit on your hands and try to coordinate your bug eyes and walnut sized brain to process the knowledge I laid out for you. If you cant manage, which I doubt by now you will, know your role as an idiot nigger and save your energy for the next time you have to push your broken down peice of shit car across the street from the impound lot.

turn signals do nothing in front or back, and dont flash on the dash

I'll vote bulbs again. Each vehicle is different, but they all seem to do some crazy stuff when one or more bulbs are out. I didn't run taillights on my play truck for awhile, and every time I hit the brakes, the signals would come on and stay on untill i released the brake, and this is with no hazards or turn signals "on." I didn't worry about it, mostly b/c i didn't care, but then built a new tailgate for the tube bed and wired up lights. All is well now.

Oh yeah, and zx and primer, just wanted to let you konw i wasn't being a smart ass to you guys, i was telling the kid to open his ears and shut up, kinda reiterating primer's "oh so diplomatic" rant to hotwolf"

Another electrical problem to add to this thread. This is on my wifes Mazda6 (I noticed it last night while she followed me home from her work place).

Headlight switched on two click (normal driving lights): Left headlights on high-beam, Right headlights on normal

Headlight switched on two clicks + pushed forward (high-beams): Left headlights on high-beam, Right headlights on high-beam

Basically the left headlight stays on high beam all the time. I'm assuming that just a burned out bulb... am I wrong? or right? Just wanted to know from TWW experts before I go and buy some new bulbs.

If it's a Mazda6, shouldn't it be new enough that you can take it to the dealer and get that looked at under warranty?

At any rate, seems to be the season for light gremlins. My current issue is that *none* of my turn signals work. No light on the dash, no flash at the light. Cornering lamps work fine, checked the fuses and they're fine. Asked around on the Lincoln boards and was told my multifunction switch might have gone bad, so looks like I get to take apart the steering column. Yay.

Really? Hmm... I'll have to take a look again. But it seemed like when I told her to switch from lowbeam to highbeam the left side didn't change any "higher". I'll have to double check it again tonight. Thanks for the suggestion though

it may be shorted out wiring. A lot of cars (esp. Jap cars) switch some things (like headlights) off the ground instead of the positive. I think there is a reason, but can't rember why.

Can anyone confirm/deny this? I'm not positive, but I think so.

^^it prolongs the life of the switch if you break the ground instead of the common.

^ I don't see how it would be any different than switching the positive side of the circuit.

Most things these days use relays to take the load off of the switches...

if it switched ground and the wire shorted aginast something metal it would be connecting to ground....can't think right now so i don't know how that would affect it, but it may. just something to check

because there isn't any electrical current sitting at the switch. it is breaking the ground.
that's why it is advised to disconnect the negative first or connect the negative last when doing any electrical work with DC voltage.

example. here is a quick schematic drawing i just did to show how i wired up the electric air valve for the air horns on my truck. i used the pedal switch on the floorboard to break the ground off of the relay so there isn't any current sitting at the pedal switch which will keep it from burning up.

My girlfriends ford focus had problems with turn signals and headlights. The turn signals would work, but only if the headlights were on, etc. Checked all the fuses and bulbs and they were fine. Turns out a squirrel had eaten through some wires and stored some nuts in her front bumper.

^^ you used a relay to take the load off the switch. The same current flows through both the positive and negative of the powered circuit. Thus, if you switch the wire directly to the powered thing, the switch will see the same current whether it is on the positive or the negative wire. A relay is the only way to lessen the load on the switch, which is what you've done and what you are talking about. And, it doesn't matter if you switch the positive or negative on the relay turn on coil either, it's the same low current either place. The reason they say to take off the negative battery cable first is to prevent arcing the wrench to ground when loosening the positive cable.

I had that problem on a '94 Firebird once... Changing the flasher did not help... turns out, the electrical socket that the bulb fits in had burned up and melted and was not making contact anymore... good luck... Thanks to Johhny's Auto and Electrical for solving the problem!
