im about to get my shit tinted....what is the legal amount i can do here in NCi wanted to get 20% all around...i think i will have to go with 35% in the front and 20% in the rears....or maybe 35 all around...anyone know the deal on that shit?
11/8/2005 7:26:00 AM
iirc, 35% all around is the legal limit
11/8/2005 7:29:17 AM
yep, 35 +/- 3%; if you have an SUV the back windows can be limo but you'll have a tougher time getting a cars dark back windows inspected. I'm not sure why they don't just list the limit as 32%
11/8/2005 7:43:40 AM
The legal limit is 32%. Stores produce 35%. When 35 is applied to factory glass, it sometimes drops to 32.Trucks can also have limo tint in the back. Only cars have the restriction of 32% all the way around. Also, 5 inches down or the AS1 line on the widshield, whichever is farther down.
11/8/2005 10:04:15 AM
just get whatever tint you want there are places you can give someone 10 bucks to pass you. i done it before.
11/8/2005 1:24:44 PM
Yep, you can spraypaint the back window of an SUV or Pickup black if you want. The premace is that pickups (and i guess SUV's) are made capable of hauling cargo that could potentially block the rear windshield, so you can get it as dark as you want. In a car, the rear windsheild is hindered by the same restrictions as the side windows.^Yeah you can do that. Hell I've done it before, but just know that you can be pulled over and issued a ticket for illegal tint, even if you have a valid, current inspection. Just an FYI, i'm not condoning or condemning it.
11/8/2005 1:42:38 PM
yeah, I drove with 5% all around for about 3 months, SHP and RPD would pass me all the time and no problem, then i got pulled twice for it within the space of a week i figure it isnt wise to attract that kind of attention right now but i plan on putting all 5% back on once my license is restored
11/8/2005 2:29:21 PM
^what is it that causes you to require illegal tint?
11/8/2005 2:30:56 PM
And just as a side note, did y'all know that license plate frames, even the ones that come on new cars from dealerships, are technically illegal? And if a cop wants to pull you over for investigative purposes, he can pull you over if you have a license plate frame. Even if it doesn't cover up anything at all. crazy huh? Just an FYI so you don't try to call BS on an actual law.
11/8/2005 3:25:17 PM
Dark tint looks great on black cars. I love my 20%.
11/8/2005 8:19:34 PM
i had 20% on my old mk3 and passed inspection without questions.
11/8/2005 9:31:04 PM
I wouldn't go below 20 if you care about getting hassled by the man.
11/8/2005 9:38:06 PM
^ agreed, also, to me, it gets hard as shit to see at night when you have darker than 20%.
11/8/2005 9:40:04 PM
inspection is no problemso if i get 20 all around, i should have no issues with police??35 is just too light
11/9/2005 12:37:13 AM
I got 5% all the way around on my truck but since its a lifted truck nobody really notices the tinted glass. But yea its pretty hard to see out my side windows at night, thats a downfall of dark tint.
11/9/2005 2:58:08 AM
^^im trying to get this done asap...lemme know what you all think
11/9/2005 7:03:45 AM
HELLO?
11/9/2005 11:31:03 AM
20 shouldn't get cop attention, but if you do get pulled for something else and the guy is a prick, they'll probably tack it on for the hell of it.
11/9/2005 11:34:12 AM
If you happen to get pulled, and have illegal tint, roll your front two windows down. That is if they are electric of course.
11/9/2005 11:44:49 AM
do they not hae a 30%?

I have 20 percent on a black car and kinda dark gray interior. At night looks like a shadow moving except for the chrome accents around the windows. Cops haven't bother me yet (knocks on wood) then I haven't been doing anything really stupid to cause them to stop me.

I keep a thermometer in my vents, and this summer after having my windows tinted on my big black car interior temps were 30 degrees lower than with no tint.
11/9/2005 5:38:07 PM
nothing says you are black like a good tint. even better if its an acura
11/9/2005 11:17:38 PM
^how very perceptive
11/10/2005 4:17:26 AM
^^^ Really? I have legal tint all around and its still hot as hell in my car. Course I bought it that way so I couldn't really tell if there is a difference. Maybe I should look at actually using some sort of windshield blocker during the day.
11/10/2005 6:41:01 AM
yeah, i have 20% from TVP though[Edited on November 10, 2005 at 7:27 AM. Reason : jkiug]

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: Section 1. G.S. 20-127, as amended by Chapter 683 of the 1993 Session Laws (Reg. Sess. 1994), reads as rewritten: "ยง 20-127. Windows and windshield wipers. (a) Windshield Wipers. -- A vehicle that is operated on a highway and has a windshield must have a windshield wiper to clear rain or other substances from the windshield in front of the driver of the vehicle and the windshield wiper must be in good working order. If a vehicle has more than one windshield wiper to clear substances from the windshield, all the windshield wipers must be in good working order. (b) Window Tinting Restrictions. -- A window of a vehicle that is operated on a highway or a public vehicular area must comply with this subsection. The windshield of the vehicle may be tinted only along the top of the windshield and the tinting may not extend more than five inches below the top of the windshield or below the AS1 line of the windshield, whichever measurement is longer. Any other window of the vehicle may be tinted in accordance with the following restrictions: (1) The total light transmission of the tinted window must be at least thirty-five percent (35%). A vehicle window that, by use of a light meter approved by the Commissioner, measures a total light transmission of more than thirty-two percent (32%) is conclusively presumed to meet this restriction. (2) The light reflectance of the tinted window must be twenty percent (20%) or less. (3) Tinted film or another material used to tint the window must be non-reflective and must be a color other than red, yellow, or amber. (c) Tinting Exceptions. -- The window tinting restrictions in subsection (b) of this section apply without exception to the windshield of a vehicle. The window tinting restrictions in subdivisions (b)(1) and (b)(2) of this section do not apply to any of the following vehicle windows: (1) A window of an excursion passenger vehicle, as defined in G.S. 20-4.01(27)a. (2) A window of a for-hire passenger vehicle, as defined in G.S. 20-4.01(27)b. (3) A window of a common carrier of passengers, as defined in G.S. 20-4.01(27)c. (4) A window of a motor home, as defined in G.S. 20-4.01(27)d2. (5) A window of an ambulance, as defined in G.S. 20-4.01(27)f. (6) The rear window of a property-hauling vehicle, as defined in G.S. 20-4.01(31). (7) A window of a limousine. (8) A window of a law enforcement vehicle. (9) A window of a multipurpose vehicle that is behind the driver of the vehicle. A multipurpose vehicle is a passenger vehicle that is designed to carry 10 or fewer passengers and either is constructed on a truck chassis or has special features designed for occasional off-road operation. A minivan and a pickup truck are multipurpose vehicles. (10) A window of a vehicle that is registered in another state and meets the requirements of the state in which it is registered.(d) Violations. -- A person who does any of the following commits a misdemeanor of the class set in G.S. 20-176: (1) Applies tinting to the window of a vehicle that is subject to a safety inspection in this State and the resulting tinted window does not meet the window tinting restrictions set in this section. (2) Drives on a highway or a public vehicular area a vehicle that has a window that does not meet the window tinting restrictions set in this section. (e) Defense. -- It is a defense to a charge of driving a vehicle with an unlawfully tinted window that the tinting was removed within 15 days after the charge and the window now meets the window tinting restrictions. To assert this defense, the person charged must produce in court, or submit to the prosecuting attorney before trial, a certificate from the Division of Motor Vehicles or the Highway Patrol showing that the window complies with the restrictions."

typically cops won't pull you over for tint alone...you have to be doing something stupid, such as speeding, to get pulled, and the cop will tap on the tint on top of the other offense.
11/11/2005 3:00:37 AM
i got pulled specifically for minehe then proceded to harrass me about my provisional license, ask me repeatedly if i had been drinking, and give me a breathalyzer......around 5 pm that particular day
11/11/2005 5:35:52 AM
yeah that's the bitch of it... rarely will they pull you over with intentions of giving you a tint ticket, but the fact is that is a valid reason to pull you over if they have any suspicions of anything else. Say you're leaving a party but you're not swerving, no headlights/taillights out, not speeding, he can't pull you w/o a reason, but illegal tint gives him that reason.
11/11/2005 8:45:40 AM
20% on my truck for 2 years with no problems. If you get pulled or go through a checkpoint just roll your windows down. 20% matches the back factory tint pretty close so it looks good anyway.
11/11/2005 8:56:03 AM
i prolly gonna go with this special film my buddy uses at his shop....its a 30 percent film, but will register at 32 which is the legal limit...it doesnt bubble over time and WILL NOT degrade....very nice stuff, plus i get a lifetime warranty150 bucks
11/13/2005 8:41:21 AM
heres what it looks like on my buddy's Vi know its a bad shot to see the tint though

The temperature thing mentioned above is very true. I've got 35% on my RSX and it was noticably cooler in the car in the summer after I had the tint applied. If it is sitting in direct sun for a prolonged period of time though, with a black interior, it is going to get hot no matter what kind of tint I use. Another nice thing about it is that if someone behind me has their brights on, or just a truck/SUV that sits up higher is behind me, the lights aren't nearly as blinding in my mirrors. I would imagine that the darker the tint, the more effective that would be, but I do not wish to draw any unwarented attention.
