Bowden went, what 7-2 (could have been 8-2 had they let him coach the whole season) against South Carolina. If Amato would have been at least above .500 against UNC, things would be completely different for both UNC and NC State. First, let's just say the 2004 game had ended with the TD and we kick the PAT and win. We go to a bowl game, and UNC doesn't, as it was, UNC had an inkling of momentum and the heat on Amato began with that 5-6 season and a crucial "loss" to UNC. Who knows, TOB may have stayed at BC one more year and then come here, I don't know. Most likely, UNC would have fired Bunting after no bowl in 04 (which would have been 3 straight years with no bowl) and a huge charge for Spurrier would have been made, probably would have landed him over South Carolina. Don't let UNC fans kid you about not wanting Spurrier for whatever reason they throw at you, the hihg ups would have been all over it.Bottom line, beating UNC goes a lot further with our fans than Clemson beating South Carolina. You can rag on Bowden all you want, but he owned South Carolina at 7-2, and one of the losses was on a Clemson missed FG under 40 yards. How many of us would take 8-4 every year beating UNC 7 out of our last 9, essentially 8 out of 10 with the fill in. Sign me up.

^^why cant you bring that type of knowledge to threads created AFTER 2005

Yeah but Tammy had more talent and Clemson has always been the school for football in SC. They have always been better than SC, and by a wide margin at that. You can't say that about the UNC and State. They are both about the same, with UNC having a slight edge b/c of idiots that want to go there b/c Jordan went there. WTF indeed? Jordan didn't play football you idiots. That would be like if some kid went to Duke just b/c Grant Hill went there, or someone going to Penn State for basketball just b/c they idolized Joe Paterno. It really doesn't make any sense. There's not much separating UNC and State, but there is a hell of a lot separating USC and CU.

honestly, if you're not beating South Carolina while you're head coach of Clemson, you're not going to be head coach for long.Tommy was, so all the pressure on him came in the form of ACC Championships and heightened expectations. He didn't "step down" because of our rival. On the contrary, Bunting beat State when the heat was on, so it seemed, plus he did the whole "hand over the heart" during the alma mater after losing, which I think those things kept him around a little bit longer. Chuck Amato was a no talent ass clown of a head coach who made excuses for losing by inches. If he had beaten UNC more, it still may not have been good enough to save his ass. I can honestly say that 2004-2007 was the most frustrated football watching I've ever experienced. I sat through every game of Panthers 1-15 season, and we were just bad. But those years at NC State being a football fan were absolutely god awful because we took losing to a new art form by making the dumbest in game decisions ever (both players and coaches). I'll never forget Amato's SURPRISE FAKE PUNT @ Wake Forest when we were down 8 points, with 1 minute or so left. Are. You. Kidding. Me.

Worst Chuck playcall ever was the time we put a couple of defensive linemen in at fullback and tailback at like the 50 yard line.
