by James Frey. this is the best book ever. it's a true story about his experiences in a drug treatment facility. it's very graphic and vulgar and raw. i promise that it is the best book ever.they have it for $10 at walmart so go buy it.go to http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0385507755/ref=sib_dp_pop_ex/103-8197614-0487807?%5Fencoding=UTF8&p=S00E#reader-linkto read the first couple of pages.

10/26/2005 10:36:11 PM
no
10/26/2005 10:38:12 PM
BECAUSE OPRAH SAID SO
10/26/2005 10:41:45 PM
PSI BET "CARTER BEATS THE DEVIL" IS A BETTER BOOK THAN THIS
10/26/2005 10:42:15 PM
i normally don't like oprah's book selections and normally don't pay attention to anything she says about books, but my aunt recommended this book.so it's not all oprah's doing
10/26/2005 10:43:54 PM
i actually thought when oprah was all like "I'M ALL ABOUT THE CLASSICS NOW" she meant it...boy was i wrong

uh yeah the fact that i'm female is so damn funny. it's a very good book[Edited on October 26, 2005 at 10:54 PM. Reason : t]

American Psycho was also very graphic and raw, and I freakin' hated that book.Give a better reason to read it.
10/26/2005 11:12:54 PM
well, it's not american psycho. it's extremely emotional. you get a very detailed picture of what it's like to be addicted to something and what it takes to stop using it. james hates AA and the 12 step program so you get to see how he stayed sober w/o believing in god or a higher power. the writing style is very different and i think it makes the experience more real for the reader. you really feel as if you've stepped into his shoes.[Edited on October 26, 2005 at 11:18 PM. I took the gender test and got an F.
10/27/2005 12:15:39 AM
you want emotional and raw and drugs and real stories?
10/27/2005 12:18:55 AM
10/27/2005 9:05:12 AM
if they carry it at wal-mart, it's probably not all that graphic, vulgar, or raw
10/27/2005 11:54:10 AM
it's probably tame, wholesome, and cooked.
10/27/2005 11:56:46 AM
They sell guns at Wal*Mart. I don't see why they wouldn't sell this book. It's not like it's killing unborn fetuses or liberating illegal migrant workers.
10/27/2005 12:01:44 PM
^^^^you make no sense^^^have you never been to walmart??if you don't want to read it, fine...but you're missing out on a good book just because you wanted to be a prick and make fun of me because i'm a girl.if anything i would be more concerned that woodfoot is male and appears to watch oprah so often...
10/27/2005 12:38:23 PM
^woodfoot works in an office full of women
10/27/2005 2:06:39 PM
holy shitoprah is a bounty hunter by proxy now

The best book about addiction:
10/27/2005 4:15:15 PM
based on this, i will NEVER read a million little pieces.books that let you "step into the shoes" of druggies, people with severe mental illnesses, and other psychological issues tend to be- unorganized as hell- a little too real, with regards to their hell- irritatingwhen theyre written by the person who lived it.when books like that are co-authored, i find them to be marginally better. and by co-authored, i DONT mean written by two alters i can only imagine how fucking chaotic and painstaking books like this must be for people with no mental illnesses.
10/27/2005 4:19:03 PM
Sry I did not read the whole thread.I have been wanting to read that for a while, but the Oprah show made me want to read it even more.
10/27/2005 11:22:24 PM
bttt...i just finished it.its really good...the best book ive read in a while.
11/28/2005 10:57:44 AM
I"m not going to read it just because Oprah commented on it. If a book isn't about horror or adventure, I'm not interested. If drugs somehow tie into the story, fine, but I doubt a book recommended by Oprah is going to have vampires/demons/etc. in it.BTW, Woodfoot I too work in an office full of women so I know what it's like. Conversations alternate between babies, pregnant women about to have babies, Clay Aiken, soap operas, gossip, Oprah, repeat.
11/28/2005 11:07:27 AM
thats what i first said when my sister recommended it to me, but its far from a girly/happy/gay book. its very intense, very raw, and very real.drugs dont tie into the story, drugs are the story.[Edited on November 28, 2005 at 11:15 AM. Reason : d]
11/28/2005 11:11:32 AM
But that's boring. Too me reading about someone's drug addiction problems is like reading a sob story (Oh, woe is me). Stories about vampires/demons/etc. are so much more interesting.
11/28/2005 11:14:24 AM
while its not a "horror" book in the traditional sense, I was definately cringing at some points (having root canal surgery with no drugs, ripping hair plugs out, gang rapes, etc)..its far from a "woe is me book"...in fact the author hates when peopel show him sympathy.im not trying to convince you to read it, im just saying that your assumptions arent correct.[Edited on November 28, 2005 at 11:19 AM. I, too, am able to accurately determine whether a book has any merit based on who recommends it rather than from actually reading it.
11/28/2005 11:18:19 AM
as a comparison (since you like vampires), i read "interview with a vampire" before this book, and i thought this book was leaps and bounds more intense, scary, and interesting.
11/28/2005 11:19:47 AM
I read "Children of the Night" and thought that was a pretty good book. It actually tried to explain how vampires might be able to exist and why they need to feast of blood.

Read "Ishmael" - I guarantee it will change you. Unless you're just a close-minded asshole. Or ignoramus.
11/28/2005 3:19:31 PM
alright i picked this up last night...i plan to get started on it after the 10thyou guys better not disappoint!

I'll second Ishmael. It's about the sustainability of earth and our lifestyle, our role in the environment, and other hippified things like that presented in a very unhippy way. It's a great read that really makes you think.
12/2/2005 10:46:15 AM
Honestly, I was planning on reading it until it got that stupid fucking O sticker on the cover.
12/2/2005 1:24:07 PM
12/2/2005 1:31:29 PM
Why would you want to read a dick documentary on sticking in a rehab can?
12/2/2005 1:38:49 PM
12/2/2005 2:36:47 PM
even my brother enjoyed it and he hates reading. this is the only book he's ever read for fun.
12/2/2005 2:37:41 PM
Why are you going to limit your experiences simply because it's endorsed by someone you don't like? You're not reading it because Oprah likes it, you're reading it because you want to. If someone is going to inaccurately judge you because of a little orange sticker, they aren't the kind of person you should be associating with in the first place.Jesus christ, I sound like someone's mother.
12/2/2005 3:24:41 PM
Or you're provoking it

sorry, I don't want to read about something I've lived through. It just makes me depressed.
12/2/2005 4:59:40 PM
god you people are whiny.
12/2/2005 9:40:50 PM
I've got better things to read about than the problems of some fuckup.^I think you turned a lot of people off by insisting in the thread title that people MUST read it. It's one thing to recommend something, and another to assert that everyone should read it simply because you did so and happened to enjoy it. "Very graphic, vular, and raw" is not my style, I'm afraid.
12/2/2005 10:20:49 PM
The pages on Amazon read like crap.
12/2/2005 10:35:48 PM
i urinate on books like this.mostly because i am a drug addict and i live in a storage unit with no toilets.
