brand new battery is in my car, yet it wont show lights at all or crank. I mistakenly messed up the polarity and the horn went of like crazy, but after switching it correctlythe battery doesnt even act like its connected. Any suggestions, comments?

so you connected the battery backwards? is that what you are saying?i would say check your fuses (in the car and under the hood) first. owners manual should show the locations.

clean the terminals

You've fried a couple of the fusible links.I'm not exactly sure where they are on your car, but there are usually two or three strip-style fusible links in a small black box under the hood, usually near the battery.

yea chances are that if you reversed the polarity and did it for a long time, you blew some fuses.

In this case, long time = about 0.5 second.[Edited on October 26, 2005 at 5:29 PM. Reason : get my shit straight.]

this car has maxi-fuses, located in the underhood fuse center. you most likely blew the 80-100 A main fuse, these can usually be found at your local auto parts store.

? since we're talking about batteries. When jumping a car, I was always told that the car with bad battery should be hooked up with the negative cable on the frame of the car instead of on the negative post. I wanted to be able to explain why, but I can't remember.

so you get a good ground for the dead carand you dont blow anything up
10/27/2005 10:06:03 AM
definately check all your fuses and dont do it again

Battery's release hydrogen gas. When you connect the last jumper wire an ark will be emitted. Could go Ka-Boom
10/30/2005 11:14:26 PM
^bullshitmaybe youll get a spark. a kaboom will require shit loads of H2 gas which most batteries would not leak.[Edited on October 31, 2005 at 4:49 PM. Reason : -]

i had a battery swell up on me a few weeks ago, but didnt blow up

usualy a serious internal or external short will build up enough heat to make it explode, i blew up a tractor battery before, trying to jump start it with a welder, long story, but dad in all his wisdom convinced me it would work
