Anyone have insight on a cheap and good GPS device? I am not good with directions, and wanna get one.

what do you want to use it for?
10/16/2005 12:18:39 AM
do you need a color screen or not?GPS alone wont really give you "directions". You need good mapping software to go along with it. If you have a laptop, I think you can go to best buy and get the MS version with a USB GPS receiver for like $120

well, mostly for directions.Voice would be great.and touch screen etc.I don't wanna carry my laptop around in the car.

i recommend the usb gps receiver - i have one and it works great

The cheapest is one on your cellphone, with nextel (telenav) or sprint (telenav or garmin). Actually nextel's isn't all that cheap, but sprint's is dirt cheap or free (vision comes with a $5-10 credit, depending on your plan).http://www.telenav.com is $5/mo, and garmin's is $10. All current cellphones have built-in gps receivers, so there's no additional hardware to buy.
10/18/2005 6:07:33 PM
shouldnt this be in tech talk??
10/18/2005 6:11:09 PM
unless it has very recently changed - sprint and nextel aren't receiving actual gps signals - they are using triangulation still - i'm fairly certain this is still true although i haven't checked in some time - a lot of cellphones are still more expensive than some gps receivers and they require a monthly fee
10/18/2005 6:17:34 PM
its been gps for awhile
10/18/2005 6:24:11 PM
Yeah, it has. Sprint just recently released the API, which is why no applications had been available.

That thing is hot.I wish Cingular offered the same.

how much are you actually looking to spend??? The pioneer navigation units (avic-n1 n2 and d1) are all good units and can be had for under a grand....its some of the best money i've ever spent...i just type in the phone number of any business in the country and it looks it up and gives me voice guided directions
10/18/2005 8:38:53 PM
I am looking to spend like $200
10/18/2005 8:42:47 PM
hmm, usb gps unit ($50) and some magellan software for less than $100 is probably you're only bet then
10/18/2005 8:52:51 PM
