i'd rather get a hand held GPS like my Garmin 96c. i can use it for aviation, city navigation, boating, overland navigation. i can use it for way more things, use it in any car or anywhere else, and it costs a shit ton less.

it depends really.if you're only going to use it in the car, then the installed one is your best bet. it's dvd based and has the whole U.S. on it including lots of interesting/useful info. getting an updated disc costs around $200 and is available every year so it can get expensive over time.if you want to be able to remove it on the fly to use in another vehicle, then get a garmin or magellan portable unit that you can stick to your dash. then if you sell your car, you still have it for the next one.both the installed and portable units will have voice and visual navigation aids.you should try a lot of them to figure out what features you need and are willing to pay for.

The one I got for my car was around $1200 which was by far the cheapest for that model (AVIC-N2) at the time. I'd reccomend getting the system from Lexus, not an aftermarket one. It looks better, is probably going to give you less problems, has no chance of being installed wrong...and is warrantied.

most aftermarket nav systems either sit on the dash, which is optimal, or replace the audio deck in your dash which is rather low and out of the way, which becomes a distraction.pioneer is nice, but i still like eclipse a bit more.

build a $1000 pc - $300 touchscreen - $60 usb gps receiver - the pc can be a hell of a lot cheaper but if you want a good system....

Golovko, I'm guessing you got that off of ebay?? I'm thinking of selling my N2 soon and getting a D1, the single CD slot is so annoying. Anyways, just checking on where you managed to get that price...cause its a hell of a good one
