I am looking into places to stay while on a honeymoon around whitsunday islands and the great barrier reef.

the whitsundays are incredible. definitely check out airlie beach, which is a really cool town in that area. it has a lot of cool bars and a great nightlife. also go to whitehaven beach which is (i think) the 2nd most beautiful beach in the world. i stayed in a hostel while i was there, so i dont really know many places to stay.... but i promise there are plenty of things to do. and you have to go skydiving if you decide to go to airlie beach.... it's.... well, words can't even describle it. go sailing and scuba diving in the reefs because you will see some of the most incredible creatures and corals that you will ever lay eyes on. i hope you have fun and i am jealous! i hope one day i can go back.... australia is an amazing place. Here are the whitsundays from the airplane i was skydiving from... this picture does not do them justice.[Edited on October 15, 2005 at 10:04 PM. Reason : ^ Toohey's beer is much better! ]

stay out of the water

I have been obsessed with australia since I was a little girl and I am excited about going. It is a dream of mine, but it is so expensive. A five night stay at this one resort was $1725 per person plus the flight per person round trip is about $2000. I just want to find something cheaper.

I'm not sure of the area near the great barrier reef other than Cairns. It was fun and we got to snorkel, but the conditions weren't perfect. There was much to do outside of the water as well. I was in Australia during the summer of 2004 and loved Sydney. Unless you have the specific notion of scuba diving the reef, I'd suggest staying in Manley Beach across the Harbor from Sydney. It simply doesn't get any cooler than that. It may be somewhat expensive, but ALL OF AUS IS. At MB you can hang out on the beach without seeing the city (due to the geography) but you can get to Downtown via ferry without issue. Since visiting, my wife and I mention that this is where we'd stay if we ever get a chance to head back. Not sure if there is SCUBA going on there, but the surfing was solid.

im just amazed with the great barrier reef and the sands of the whitsunday islands. I wait tables currently and I run across an australian every now and again. I always talk their ear off. I love the accent, the culture. Everything

I went there this summer and it was great. We went to Cairns but spent most of the time in Syndey. There really isen't much to Cairns other than the rainforest and the reef but sydney is a beautiful view from almost everywhere and a good nightlife.

when we were at magnetic island, by townsville, the beach had posted signs with CPR instructions due to the Box Jellyfish stings, but it was not the season for them to be swimming around when we were there

do a sailing trip while in the whitsundays, you will stay on one of the remote islands, i cant remember the name of the one i stayed on. usually it is a bunch of young people who do the trip so it is a lot of fun If you go further north on the barrier reef, and have some money to spend, def go stay at Port Douglas (about 30 miles north of Cairns). It is soooo beautiful there but is a little pricey if you dont stay in the hostel (the restaurants can be pricey too, but are really nice and "high class"). It's right in between the reef and the Daintree rainforest, so there is a lot of cool sightseeing stuff to do there. Since it's your honeymoon, I would def choose Port Douglas.
10/16/2005 1:54:44 PM
Honestly, its not a "honeymoon" type place, but it is beautiful. I think Australia is a 2-3 week trip (which is why I say not for a honeymoon), you say you're planning to go for 5 days, it literally takes about a day just to adjust to the time changes after that flight. Its not worth the money for a week I'm telling you. I thoroughly enjoyed it when we were there. We saw so much. I don't really know how much money we spent, and I don't really know of anything "cheaper" than what you're speaking of.

Again..not a good honeymoon spot, I cannot believe no one agrees with me on this, Australia is NOT a one week trip.
10/19/2005 6:49:24 AM
Australia isn't a 6 month trip either. I miss Sydney.

stay away from any animal native to australia, ie spiders, ants, anything else. they are weird mutated forms of normal insects/animals we have in the rest of the world. australia is a horrible country
10/19/2005 3:57:14 PM
the outback steakhouse i saw was in parramatta, right outside sydney. it's probably a new thing; i doubt they're all over the place. i met an australian in europe and told him about it and he had never heard of them either. but i promise i saw one.[Edited on October 19, 2005 at 4:30 PM. 10/19/2005 5:07:58 PM
I like to think that Australia is like Africa, but for white people.
10/19/2005 5:36:02 PM
I never saw an Outback Steakhouse in Parramatta, but I wasn't over there too often.
