According to snopes, it's not as widespread or tolerated as the news reports imply. And does anyone know what they're saying in the video?http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/sharkbait.asp

It wouldn't surprise me if it's been done by a few sickos (just like about anything else has been done by a few sickos), but that article is probably fake, indicated by the obviously fake picture they have. You really think a hook through the mouth would handle a dog being dragged by a boat?okay, I just saw the vid, and I take that back about the fake pic... [Edited on October 14, 2005 at 12:39 AM. Reason : but the rest stands]

it doesnt really bother me that much more than stupid fucking college students with pets that havent been spayed or neuteredthe strays are just going to be destroyed

What bothers me is the physics of the whole thing. I seriously doubt the top lip of a dog can withstand the forces involved in being towed by a boat. Secondly, the hooks shown are pretty dang small if they are hunting anything large enough to eat that dog.
10/14/2005 1:35:28 AM
its not like they are skiing, i cant imagine that the boat will be going that fast
10/14/2005 1:38:27 AM
^^^ yes but I would much rather a dog be euthanized than gutted with fishooks and then dragged through the waters before being eaten by a shark.

yepmy gf saw this

while it makes me sad to think about this, my logical side says that if you can justify hooking a fish or a shark, you can just as easily justify hooking a dog.Look, there are plenty of emotional and social reasons for saying this is terrible, but in truth, an animal is an animal is an animal. Now, emotional reasons, sure. If I saw anyone doing this I"d probably stop them myself. That doesn't mean that I logically think it's worse than baiting a fish or anything else.Hell, they eat cats in some asian countries, and some people call that cruel. They call it lunch.

I agree that a human is an animal. I was just using what people always tell me, that animals are less important than people, to my advantage in the argument. Also, I don't think fish normally eat nightcrawlers.
10/14/2005 8:49:33 AM
this is sad but how is this different that hooking up a fish?

Dogs obviously have more complex thought processes than fish, just like those tool-using Gorillas have more complex though processes than dogs, and us car-driving humans have more complex thought processes than gorillas (only marginally for some of us). From a circle-of-life perspective, this is business as usual, but from a civilized society perspective, it's pretty barbaric. We are drowning man's best friend, then feeding it to a shark. It's pretty gruesome.
