do you trust your life to them?
10/12/2005 8:03:20 PM
that is a very bad idea
10/12/2005 8:05:13 PM
no. go buy some jack stands. 20 bucks at sears.
10/12/2005 8:05:44 PM
I would strongly suggest not doing that. I always used 2 jack stands and a locked hydraulic jack when I went under...and I still felt a little iffy
10/12/2005 8:06:02 PM
is it? what should i use then? cinder blocks?
10/12/2005 8:06:04 PM
jack stands? are tehy the things you drive your car onto?
10/12/2005 8:06:33 PM
im pretty sure you're on the internet and google holds the answer[Edited on October 12, 2005 at 8:08 PM. Reason : pic]
10/12/2005 8:07:53 PM
if i wanted to try and find the answer on google i wouldnt ahve asked here
10/12/2005 8:08:32 PM
comprende?
10/12/2005 8:09:49 PM
oh ok they are like 20 bucks?
10/12/2005 8:10:21 PM
yeah, and walmart has them for cheap usually
10/12/2005 8:11:04 PM
you can also use ramps, but jackstands can be used for all kinds of under-car repairs (suspension, brakes, exhaust, etc.). you cant use ramps if you're taking the wheels off..[Edited on October 12, 2005 at 8:30 PM. Reason : 0000]
10/12/2005 8:29:36 PM
never use ramps, way too dangerous, they shouldnt even be allowed to sell them in the US, sell them fuckers to some iraqis, who need to be crushed to death
10/12/2005 8:41:09 PM
what is the failure rate for ramps?
10/12/2005 8:44:41 PM
curbs are free.
10/12/2005 8:53:52 PM
i would imagine one of those little oil change places, or walmart for that matter, will do it cheaper than the cost of oil, jackstands and filter
10/12/2005 8:56:31 PM
i use ramps all the time. if theyre metal ramps, theyre fine. if theyre rhino ramps just keep an eye on em for cracks, etc. they have a lifetime warranty
10/12/2005 9:20:03 PM
if you risk it and use spare tire jacks at the very least block the car up
10/12/2005 9:25:11 PM
curbor get a 4wd vehicle where you aint gotta do anything other than catch the oil
10/12/2005 10:08:56 PM
the cheaper steel ramps arent nearly as strong as the reinforced steel ones, or rhino ramps. low slung late model cars benefit from the rhino ramps longer slope.
10/12/2005 10:28:09 PM
are you man enough to use only spare tire jacks? didnt think so
10/12/2005 10:58:12 PM
every once in a while, but not on any cars with any weight to 'em
10/12/2005 11:02:13 PM
haha, spare tire jacks. Welcome to darwin award contention.I don't really feel safe even with jackstands, but what else is there other than a lift?.
10/13/2005 12:38:32 AM
1. dig hole in ground2. lay in hole3. have a friend drive car over hole and walk off with keys leaving you stuck there4. profit rest of world profits
10/13/2005 12:43:10 AM
if the audi jack is anything like the vw jack, the last thing you want to do is climb under a car supported by one, or two
10/13/2005 12:48:47 AM
^ he's got a point. they call it the "widowmaker jack" for a reason.

Back when I was in highschool and didn't know shit about cars or working on them, I did this all the time when changing oil. Of course it wasn't a good idea though.Actually, I just used one jack on one side of my mom's Kia and my sister's Cavalier. I lived to tell about it though, obviously. Jackstands are cheap enough that you should just go ahead and get at least two.
10/13/2005 2:00:53 AM
i know a few peeps who have seen those jacks fail and cars fall on people

it's not a big word if you work in the real world [Edited on October 13, 2005 at 9:39 AM. Reason : dfs]

to change the oil on my car i dont even have to jack it up at alli can fit under there when its on the ground with all 4 tires but i have jack stands for when i do other shitor if i dont wanna squeeze under the car haha
10/13/2005 10:42:15 AM
ive done it before, its not that bad, but usually i use a hydrolic jack to jack up the car, and put the stands under it, then i move the hydrolic jack to under the k member just in case

there arent many cars that you can't reach the drain plug form laying on your back and reaching under, the filter is a different story though, i cant ever remember having to jack up a vehicle to change the oil, but then again, the only car we ever had in the family was my sisters t-bird. hell on my dad's truck i could sit under it, and lean back against the tire while the oil was draining.

today i say a guy working on his car, he was crawled up underneath the thing from the front, and it was proped up on 1 jack, and then the tire was off and the wheel was underneath the rotor, to further help prop the car up. but the kicker was that the car was on a hill, and if it would have rolled off the jack or wheel it would have crushed the guy mad max stylei laughed
10/18/2005 2:52:00 AM
even when i weighed 300 lbs, i could easily fiy under my car. now at 190 lbs you could drive right over me and it is stock suspension. but i forgot about this when i offered to change my bros oil in his 92 prelude....... couldnt get the oil pan under is right.
10/21/2005 4:10:09 AM
There are plenty floor jacks I can't even get under my frame rails
10/21/2005 4:16:36 AM
you could drive a go kart without a roll cage under my frame rails, the only thing i dread is shit on top of the engine which involves standing on the push bar to put oil in it. spark plugs are a breeze though, reach right through the wheel wells, a i swear i think i could pull the heads out through there
10/21/2005 11:59:09 AM
i always jack up one side of the car with a hydraulic 5000lb jack and use one jack stand just in case the jack let's lose, i haven died yet, if im rotating tires ill use 2 jack stands.
