I'm looking for about a 40 or 50 foot USB extension cable...not too worried about loss of signal and bandwidth because its just to be able to move a remote control IR receiver into another room...any suggestions without paying out the ass for your average Cat5 extenders?

for what that costs, you can get a damn better remote.

i can get a remote control that goes around walls or goes through cinderblock walls?

Yes, you can. Get an RF remote and not an IR remote.

You can't go more than like 10 or 20 without SIGNIFIGANT signal loss. You won't get any useable signal after 40 or so feet. You would have to have at LEAST one usb repeater.[Edited on October 10, 2005 at 1:01 PM. Reason : I'm with them, get an RF remote]

Not sure if you could use it since you're asking for USB, but I have long Cat5 cable I could get you for relatively cheap.

^^well then...what do you think would be the best solution for me? Basically I have my Media Center / DVR computer in one room and my TV out in my living room...I've got S-Video and RCA Audio run from the computer to the TV so I can watch DVR'd shows on my TV, but if I want to fast forward past commercials, etc, I have to go into my computer room...I would like to be able to use my computer's remote control in my TV room but the computer's remote control sensor only has about a 6' USB cable...I was thinking I would run the extension cable from my computer to my TV room and just plug it into the IR sensor when I wanted to watch something DVRd...suggestion?

Is moving the computer an option?

you can probably order those through the bookstore or possibly daisy chain them. I know the supposed limits are pretty low, but I know people have daisychained high end cables over 200 ft. your best option would be to buy bulk cable and just put on the ends yourself though, cause a 50 ft usb cable is gonna run you about 40 bucks at the bookstore and I'm sure you could make it less than that.

i would vote in favor of an RF wireless keyboard or an RF remote.

I'd suggest buying a wireless keyboard and mouse and make sure they are RF. Then you could keep that mouse and keyboard in your tv room and completely control the computer from there.

yeah, but way back in the day when they had a guy on the screen savers who held a record for the longest working usb daisy chain. he got it up to 200 ft. now I don't know what he did, but I know he didn't use the cat5e extenders.

I have actually had a Logitech wireless (RF) keyboard and mouse but the signal is still weak as fuck...my cellphone doesnt work well in my apartment...there is plenty of radio interference...so would 3 USB cables with repeaters work do you think?

Powered USB hubs might help witht he length issue.
10/10/2005 3:36:32 PM
why dont you just move the computer?

Cat5 and USB are nothing like each other
10/11/2005 1:29:48 AM
unless you are running one of my patent pending cables
10/11/2005 1:47:11 AM
^^ok i guess you've never seen one of these which I mentioned earlierit uses Cat5 cable to extend USB...course they charge like $100, hence why I was looking for another solution]

fuuck, looks like i need to get my ass in gear on my stuff.my converters run 1/10th that
10/11/2005 12:23:27 PM
yeah i dunno...i sure as hell dont wanna pay a hundred bucks just to do what i want to do...hell i might just be better off using the 50' ps2 extension cables i've got and running a separate keyboard and mouse out to the TV room and using a KVM switch
10/11/2005 12:59:30 PM
^^Which you can buy where?
