I have a 93 4runner with a mechanical cooling fan controlled by a fan clutch. The fan stays on all the damn time! The truck does not overheat, temperature doesn't fluctuate once it reaching normal operating temperture.I replaced the fan clutch with a brand new toyota oem part. Still does it. I sprayed out the fins of the radiator with a hose - it had quite a bit of clay and mud in it. I thought this fixed it (the blockage alloweed the radiator to cool, but no air passed through it, so the clutch never cooled and stayed locked up). This worked for one day. however today, a 60 degree morning, the fan stayed on all the way to work! It really hamperes the performance as well as mileage. my mileage has gone down 3 mpg since this problem started.I have a new thermostat to put in and I'll flush the system. even clutched mechanical fans are going to spin some when they're not engaged, enough for you to hear it. sure that's not it? i assume the new clutch included a new t-stat?

I'm pretty sure it's engaged when it shouldn't be. It's a recent developement, it never used to be loud, and my buddy's pickup w/ the same engine isn't nearly as loud.

fuc it and put an electric fan on. save you mpg reguardless and it will run cooler in the summer as the 3.0slow fans suck to begin with

PROBLEM FIXED! I removed the radiator this weekend and replaced the thermostat - although I don't think anything was wrong with it. The radiator, however, was packed with clay and mud. It was behind the shroud and fan so I couldn't see it when it was on the truck. I spent a good 30 min spraying it out untill I could see through it. Drove it to work today (50 miles) and the fan didn't engage once. There are soil remnants of uwharrie and tellico all over my driveway.

Hows the supposed broken flexplate doing? can you still hear the racket or did it turn out to be something else? Just curious as to what it was.[Edited on October 10, 2005 at 4:06 PM. Reason : It still only got 13mpg when I had it, You get better than that now?]

I really don't know what the rattle was... i really don't think it was the flexplate. I turned up the idle about 75 rpm and the noise is gone. I got 17mpg on one tank driving 70 mph to work and back before the fan thing. I put manual hubs on it which helped some. It dropped to 15.5 when the fan decided to stay on all the time. my new tacoma V6 auto 4x4 gets 19 on the same trip, 2 mpg difference isn't that bad considering the technology difference[Edited on October 10, 2005 at 4:57 PM. Dad and I have to spray radiators out on a regular basis. Hell, I just had to change his. What happens when you spend a lot of time off pavement. Most of ours is chaff and seeds, though. Not a whole lot of mud.
