i have two computers, a cable modem, and a 4-port wireless router. i connect the main computer to the router via an ethernet cable. i connect the second computer to the router wirelessly. this morning i switched cable companies and we are now with comcast. i had absolutely zero problems with this setup with our old cable company. everything worked fine until this morning.the new cable modem works fine when it is connected directly to my main computer via an ethernet cable. but when i take the output from the cable modem and plug it into the router (with an ethernet cable connecting my main computer to slot number 1 on the router), things get strange. i have to do an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew to get it working and then everything works fine on both computers for 30-45 minutes. and then the internet connection goes down on both computers. the fix is as follows:1. undo the ethernet cable from the main computer to port 1 on the wireless router and plug that ethernet cable into the cable modem directly. then release and renew the ip address to get the internet working on the main computer.2. plug the the cable modem into the router, release and renew ip to get everything working on both computers.this works for 30-45 minutes and then i have to do it again.what gives?[Edited on September 24, 2005 at 2:00 PM. the router is a Netgear MR814v2I think this issue might be somehow related to the "Standby" button on my new cable modem (Motorola SB5101). the standby button is supposed to be some sort of "security" feature that lets you basically block all incoming and outgoing traffic from the cable modem with the push of one button.
