9/23/2005 2:21:49 PM
My laptop runs Linux. Its only problem is trying to do anything productive.Which happens the be the same problem you have.Cept my laptop can run full HD movies and Tuxracer like a beast.I win.
9/23/2005 2:23:37 PM

yeah, I had a pc my junior year in high school (5 years ago) with an athlon 1.33ghz, 512mb of ram, a pioneer dvd burner (superdisk drive), and 200gb of hard drive space.
9/23/2005 2:51:02 PM
i was always under the impression that 1.4ghz on an apple is not the same as 1.4ghz on a PC.that being said, I have an old powerbook (bout 2 years old i think)867 mhz640mb ram32 mb nvidia GeForce4 mx12" display1024x768 res.40gb hdairport extremebluetoothand it's a great computer
9/23/2005 4:19:41 PM
A PowerPC processor at 1.4 Ghz /= an Intel processor at 1.4 Ghz.However, the Mac : Windows CPU comparisson will be valid as soon as Apple starts sticking Intels into their machines.

I used a powerbook over the summer (I had a job video editing) and I wasn't very impressed. Being a longtime Windows user, and now Linux user, I had high expectations for OS X (the laptop I had was running 10.4), yet it managed to fail in almost every aspect. Stability was horrible, Final Cut crashed all the time (wasn't user error either, all the A/Vs had this problem, including the longtime mac users). The UI took some getting used to, and didn't feel more productive even after I'd been using it for a while, and though it was very pretty, it also felt kinda sluggish. To each his own though I suppose.

santa, get off your HD high horse.. Who cares?your dell is still inferior to my powerbook.and I'd have to say it's productive..and last time I checked, you weren't running linux..
9/25/2005 2:32:12 PM
while the g4 may have pretty wide pipelines.. it's far from being even close to competitive with really any modern x86 chip. a 1.xx g4 is not going to the have the flop count of a similar speed pentium-m or a top of the line x86 chip from 3 years prior.

^It's actually fairly common for working in the field, shoot your film and do some basic edits on the spot to see how it looks before taking it into the studio. I've done that filming political stuff before. The better question is how the fuck did he get it to crash all the time
