We found a big, pretty new TV on the street so, naturally, we took it. But there is a big black band at the bottom with no picture and the image seems to be concentrated where the band stops and spreads out from there.

Any body seen this before, or should I trash it?

the electron gun is shot. it'd be more economical to buy a cheap one in a pawn shop than to go through the trouble of even getting an estimate on repair. I've seen tv repair shops charge 25 bucks or so for just the diagnostic fee, and I picked up my 19'' for 50 bucks.

get some big magnets and move them around the screen to fix it, ours has red and blue bands that mags fixed

how big is it?

the problem is probably in the tube (expensive to fix since you have to replace the tube), not sure if I could fix it, but if you're just gonna trash it I'd like to play around with it and see what happens or use it for spare parts...heck I could even come pick it up.

Also, don't use magnets on it, that will only make the problem worse. The magnets are used to fix color purity problems, ie: a reddish or bluish tint to the picture in certain spots due to the shadow mask getting partially magnetized. If the picture is completely black in the lower portion of the screen the magnets won't fix it
