every time i turn it on. its like a loud humming sound that kind of reverborates (sp?). its kind of old, i've had it since august of 2000. it almost sounds like its going to blow up or something. does anyone know what this could be or how i can go about fixing it?

Things to ask yourself to find out WHERE in the computer exactly it's coming from (these assume desktop):Does it happen as soon as you turn it on, or does it take a few seconds (as in, does it happen only once your hard drive light starts blinking)?Does it happen only when your optical drive is closed?Does it sound like it's coming from the powersupply (back of the computer) or from somewhere deep inside the computer?I'm guessing you've got a bad or going-bad bearing on either your processor, case, powersupply, or video card fan. Hopefully it's a case fan, because that's the easiest to replace. If it's a laptop, it's also probably a fan bearing, but harder to tell which one excatly.

yeah its a desktop and i'm not sure exactly where its coming from. it starts about the same time i turn it on and gets louder after windows boots up. i'll take the covers off and try to single it out when i get home. thanks for the help

Yeah, probably the fan. Could be something hitting the fan (like a cable or wire). [Edited on September 17, 2005 at 1:46 AM. Reason : .]
