NA. Don't want no stinkin' turbos. This is my uncle's daily driver, and it's got around 180k on it. He wants to start fresh with a good, well-built tranny (automatic) and either rebuild or replace the engine.I have never fucked with a 2JZ-GE engine, but I know from past experiences with engines like the 5/7M-GE that rebuilding this one is NOT going to be cheap. I was thinking about getting a Japanese engine from someplace like Japan Direct and installing that.If you have any good sources for a built tranny or a Jap engine, speak up. Enquiring minds want to know.

Reason : just curious, what happened to your uncle's engine?]

As to what happened to the engine? Has cooling issues; overheated a time or so. I actually haven't even looked at it yet, but it's something he's voiced an interest in doing, so I figured I would get my ducks in a row and have info ready to go.If it's not even using oil or anything, and compression checks out okay, I'm gonna tell him not to touch it. He's afraid of head warpage and potential head gasket issues. I don't know just how sensitive this engine is to overheating and head warpage; I've got a Nissan L28 head at the house that you can place on a flat surface and see light under. Long aluminum head...The tranny ain't shifting too hot either, according to him, so that's another thing I want to look at.Bottom line is, this car is my uncle's favorite out of all of his vehicles, and he wants everything on it to be RIGHT. Hell, good machine work by itself on an engine like this is gonna require a bit of money. Throw in parts, and I am sure I could have just bought another engine...and then some.I just got off the phone with Johnnie, though, and he said he doesn't have one and can't keep 'em...this doesn't look too good.

buy a donor car. pull the motor. part out what you can. crush what's left.
9/13/2005 2:14:15 PM
Good idea. I'll check out Adesa...

i know the block is damn near bulletproof on those things, but i'm not sure how sensitive to overheating the head is. i think the only time my 7m overheated was when the thermostat died, but it wasn't hot long enough to cause serious damage.is it still on its first tranny? 180k seems like it'd be about due to shit the bed. u sure he wants an auto? the 6-speeds those came would last long than your uncle will ur best bet may just be spending a significant amount of time online looking for a new engine and tranny. if that fails then look into a rebuild; i'd bet there's a toyota shop around here that would love to get into it.i understand this bein his favorite car, i love em too. just don't (probably won't) have the money for a semi-decent one. good luck.

Hell, I'll do the rebuild. I ain't skeert! Issues on engines like this: machine work has to be GOOD (read: Sunnen honing machine to do the final hone PERFECTLY) for the rings to seat really well, or it WILL use oil. And of course, the head will have to be done, too. Even the best silicon bronze valve guides wear, and oil consumption results.I am kind of chomping at the bit to rebuild it, but it's his final call.

if you end up needin an extra set of hands some weekend lemme know, i don't have your prowess in the shop but i can turn a wrench alright.

source the drivetrain from a wrecked gs300, there are bound to be plenty[Edited on September 13, 2005 at 4:23 PM. Reason : sd]

^ yeah seriously. and most GS300's came in automatic form[Edited on September 13, 2005 at 4:53 PM. Reason : .]

yeah seriously dan, rebuild the engine you sef.

I love rebuilding, but have to force myself to mike everything and use my plastigauge (actually I'm a LOT better about that than I was 6 or 7 years ago; ADD does seem to get better with age!).I've actually become very attentive to detail...
9/13/2005 8:25:03 PM
is rebuilding worth your time though? I guess if you'll get some enjoyment out of it...
9/13/2005 8:30:52 PM
I think rebuilding is like masturbation...it may seem pointless to everybody else and a waste of time, but at least I GET MY JOLLIES DOING IT
9/13/2005 8:37:20 PM
didn't they put the same engine in the Cressida? When those cars were sold, they were touted as being able to run for an hour in the desert with no coolant.
9/13/2005 8:47:59 PM
The later Cressida may have used the same engine, but the earlier ones used the 7M-GE (and even earlier, the 5M-GE or the 5M-E)
9/13/2005 9:00:57 PM
I don't think the Cressida ever used a 2JZ... just M series motors. GS300, IS300, and SC300 I think all use the 2JZ
9/13/2005 9:55:38 PM
who gives a fuck, even the newest cressida is too old to donate a drivetrain to a '94 supra easily. and i doubt his uncle wants some rigged up ghetto shit. theres only 2 things to do if you want anything close to total confidence in your engine/trans when you have high miles. rebuild everthing or buy reman. reman is more $, but you can get them with decent warranties. rebuild is cheaper but if it fails, it comes back on you. i say only two things, but depending on how tight your budget is, there are two more: finding a factory production (in this case toyota) crate engine (major $), or buying a (supposedly) slightly less used drivetrain from a junkyard (cheapest alternative, worst warranty)and no just any old remanufactured engine is a true crate engine. true crate engines come in "TOYOTA GENUINE PARTS" boxes, at least in this case.

you could get a topline motor pretty cheap and titanmotorsports sells factory long blocks I believe
9/14/2005 1:17:22 AM
wouodnt even waste my time swapping a new motor unless it was the gte.
9/14/2005 5:59:52 PM
Uncle is pushing 50 and ain't into all that.
