If you lock yourself out you can just hit the reset switch on the back of the router. Its no big deal if you screw up.

WEP is easy

go into your router config,
if linksys: go to wireless/wireless security
"Passphrase : " type in somthin
hit Generate, use one of the keys it gives you (ususally just use key 1)

if you connect directly to your router then you cant get locked out

then with windows tell it you're connecting to a WEP protected signal, type in the key # and thats it
if nothin else you can press the 'reset' button and try again

its not like you cant just plug into a socket in any of these dorm/condos and packet sniff just the same way (actually easier and faster).

The only reason to use WEP in a domestic environment is if you want to block your network from freeloaders in the neighborhood.

True, you could use MAC filtering, but I want to be able to use any laptop without having to bother with entering the MAC address everytime.

^^ that's only true if these ports are connected to hubs. With a switched network, you're only going to be able to get broadcasts and multicasts (if igmp snooping is unsupported or disabled) from other hosts on the network.

True, you might catch an unknown unicast flood here and there, but you wouldn't be able to get enough traffic to be useful.
