please help.

i live out in the sticks where we don't have tv cable service. i'm having to use dial up internet service and would like to have high speed internet service. everyone that lives around here and has high speed service lives off of main roads where they can attain packages through the cable service. i do have direct tv satelite, but do not know of anyone that has internet through direct tv.

does anyone have any solutions? if so, are the prices similar to cable tv/internet service packages ($40/month)?

There are two pricing plans, neither are really close to $40/month, you can peruse those yourself.

It offers 750kb/s down, which sucks, and 128kb/s up, which also sucks, but compared to dialup, I guess its pretty good, but hardly worth the $50-$99/month fee.

Satellites, I hear, have really bad latency, which makes them unusable for online gaming.

^ This is true. The speeds from sat are decent, and way better than 56k, for typical net browsing.

However the latency is horrendous and online gaming, or anything requiring a low ping, is basically out of the question.

DirecWAY isn't bad at all. You don't want to game with it due to the latency caused by the distance the satellites are out in space (35,786km x 2), but for browsing the Internet and doing email, you won't really notice this latency.

I have some neighbors in the mountains who have it, and they were very pleased with it. You also might want to check the speeds, I think they maybe are faster than what ^ said up there, but I could be wrong. Either way, it's much faster than dial-up and worh it if there are no alternatives.

whelp, i guess i won't be going the satellite way for high speed...one of the primary reasons i wanted it was for online gaming.

i've had a recent thought of looking at using sprint...

I work for earthlink and it's $600 upfront charge for installation and service and it's 79.95/mo (might be 69 not sure i'm not in sales)
We work through directway the satelite that allows you to watch tv and have internet is $100 more

online gaming is (near) impossible because your ip address refreshes with every packet burst

Try to check if anyone in your area is planning to or has already deployed a 2.5GHz wireless solution such as Motorola's Canopy equipment. Sprint beta tested this in some areas for a short period of time.

do you have line of sight with any neighbors that are close enough to get cable? if so, make friends with them and set up a directional wireless internet. you can go several miles with some of those directional antennas.

don't know how that would do for gaming though.

who provides your power (electric?). You may be able to get wildblue... It's a satellite broadband company. The previous posters are correct. Latency is an issue, but it's a hellova lot better than dialup.

i live where no one has cable service. the closest i live to someone with cable service is probably 3 miles. it just does not run down my road.

we do have a land line through sprint, so i figured i would give them a call and see what a solution may be. they told me that i live so many feet away from a certain sprint station, that they do not have high speed service for my area, just yet. that is the same thing that was told to this area 2 years ago, so who knows.

as far as paying for a 'glorified dial up' through the satellite, i don't feel comfortable with that. according to everyones input up here, satellite does not work well with online gaming, which is a reason i wanted high speed internet at the house. thats a steep price for faster email...

might be an option, but i feel as though sprint would have said something about this while i was on the phone with her. she called me back today after putting in a request with her people, they said 'not happening', and she told me that they would send out flyers when the high speed hits our area. she was nice about it though...

any more suggestions?? i suppose i should just move back to raleigh..,
