I'm going to pick up some dual sport beater in the next few months. Gots to be used, as I'm broke as shit. Thinking about either XR400 w/street legal kit, KLR 250, or the like. Any opinions or anything else to look for?
9/8/2005 2:51:42 PM
XR 400 is a good bike. But for something that size, I like the Suzuki DRZ-400 better, like waaaaaay better. My personal opinion, stay away from 250's. You won't be happy with them on the highway, though they're a blast offroad. 400's are about the perfect size to handle both with some efficiency.Myself, I'm about to buy a KLR 650, so my advice probably means nothing.

I should to dig my old xl75 out of the barn and rock that around campus Price is going to be the biggest factor in this when it comes down to it. I just want something to dick around with in town and on some dirt roads. Longest trip would probably to uwharrie or something.
9/8/2005 3:03:33 PM
If price is the biggest factor I'd look at some of the bikes that have been around for a long time. Suzuki DR-350, DR-650, Honda XR-650, Kawasaki KLR-650, etc. Any of those can be had for $1500-$2k.The DRZ-400S is my favorite, but it is newer technology and costs more. I have seen quite a few go for $2500-$3k if that fits your price range, but they just haven't been around long enough to depreciate much more than that.p.s.http://raleigh.craigslist.org/mcy/94509049.html[Edited on September 8, 2005 at 3:11 PM. now that I think about it I really might dig that damn thing out. 50 mph with a tailwind baby!
9/8/2005 3:17:23 PM
I think an XL75 on campus would get you in trouble.
9/8/2005 3:28:45 PM
Trouble? Why?
9/8/2005 3:33:12 PM
n/m...Didn't know they made a street legal 75cc. You learn something new every day.
9/8/2005 3:44:18 PM
this was way back in the day. A '78 model or something. The last thing i need right now is another project, but I might do some wrenching over xmas break.
9/8/2005 3:51:18 PM
just get one of those 110cc chinese scootersthe pigs will never know it's not legal
9/8/2005 4:18:08 PM
Yeah but this thing's got style. Panache. Only got about 20 spokes on the rear wheel though.
9/8/2005 4:27:28 PM
I'm 6'3" and 235 pounds...and I'd still roll an XL75 if I had one. "hey baby, wanna ride?" lolllllll
9/8/2005 4:29:15 PM
KTM MAHH FUCKA
9/8/2005 4:34:33 PM
^ KTM? I beleive he said CHEAP! lolllll
9/8/2005 6:20:45 PM
I could probably afford the gas cap for a Duke right now. Sweet ride though. The more I think about that damn XL75, the more I want to tear it down, rebuild the engine (probably just rings and carb rebuild) and put tags on the bitch. That'd be fun as shit around here to tool around on. Still want the bigger bike of course.75cc's of motherfucking FURY!
9/8/2005 9:12:07 PM
You would be my fucking hero if you rolled that XL75...seriously.
9/8/2005 9:14:41 PM
I'm tempted to go back to the 'rents this weekend and pick it up. Probably $100 to make it running and legal.God damn I don't need any more shit to do right now though, but this is begging to be done.
9/8/2005 9:20:39 PM
If I can get my hands on an old Honda Trail 90, we'll start a fucking street-legal mini-bike gang!
9/8/2005 9:24:48 PM
My cousin had one of those back in the day. Smoked like a motherfucker but you couldn't kill the damn thing.
9/8/2005 9:26:22 PM
I had to go looking. Dammit. Now I want one BAD! lollllll It says "simply change the sprocket and it's a real high-way cruiser." Bwahahaaaaa!!!! I LOVE this shit!!!!!! [Edited on September 8, 2005 at 9:45 PM. Reason : .]

This thread has great potential.

9/8/2005 9:49:29 PM
Oooof! I can already tell I would give up my left nut for ANY of these bikes in the pic...
9/8/2005 9:55:48 PM
the yellow bike looks like THE HEATbut you're rightthey'd all be cherry
9/8/2005 10:23:06 PM
I bet you could pick up a couple of beaters and parts bikes for maybe $600. The Trail 90's are kind of cult bikes, but any of those early jap bikes under 100cc's would work.Hell I'll start with this little XL75 and go from there. I'm taking that shit to the track though. Low 30's in the quarter mile
9/8/2005 10:30:08 PM
I'm going to look like a gorilla fucking a squirrel on this thing. God damn that's a hot bike.[Edited on September 8, 2005 at 10:36 PM. Reason : /fucked up image post]

I've been trying to find some old 70's dual-sport two-stokers to play with. But damn they're hard to come by as well. Kinda like this one I had in my sights, but the guy decided to keep it. I may shed a tear now.......and it's a two-fiddy.
9/8/2005 10:38:02 PM
Gone in a puff of smoke sounding like a chainsaw. What was he asking for that smooth ride?
9/8/2005 10:44:46 PM
He was asking a couple hundred $, and the fucker was pretty much torn down and in boxes. He wasn't really 'trying' to sell it. I just found out about it and went for it. Nice try, but no cigar as they say.But keep your spirits up if you're looking for a budget dual-sporter...one of my last ones was a barn-spotter on the way to the beach. '81 Honda XL 250. Looked to be straight out of the 70's, big round headlight, skinny tank, dual rear shocks...$200. I rode that bike on trails with all the new "hot" motorcross bikes and they couldn't lose me, for long anyway.
9/8/2005 11:05:03 PM
my grandpa has about 10 Honda Trail 90's, and at least one 110, only half of which are in working condition, and the other half arent complete since they have been scavenged for parts over the yearsthey're just like the orange one above
9/9/2005 12:21:03 AM
What is grandpa's address? lol
9/9/2005 9:18:07 AM
$1500. http://raleigh.craigslist.org/mcy/96152985.html
9/9/2005 9:57:09 AM
Thanks for the heads up on the bike. I'm not going to be able to buy this for a few months though. I'm broke as hell right now.
9/9/2005 10:08:45 AM

9/9/2005 10:24:44 AM
^ Thats cool. I was just showing you that decent deals are out there.
9/9/2005 10:31:45 AM
Bumpage/you fuckers are slacking
9/10/2005 2:46:09 PM
Hell, before the monster 75 I had an old Puch moped that i'd love to have ahold of. That was sent to junk yard heaven years ago though.
9/10/2005 4:14:26 PM
I just rode a Dual sport for the first time today, an '05 Kawasaki 250...those things are fun as hell! First time ever riding any kind of motorcycle, for that matter.
9/10/2005 7:05:26 PM
Keep this bitch at the top. Dual sports rock.
9/10/2005 9:46:00 PM
Saw a red KLR 650 heading toward campus today. Anybody know who owns it?
9/12/2005 11:42:56 AM
last summer in europe i saw some badass KTM dual sports, huge bikes with dual exhaust up the sides of the seat. I wish i had some picsparts and maintenance are very expensive on KTM's though, i used to own a 99 250sx
9/12/2005 5:00:15 PM
My BMW had dual exhaust.

9/12/2005 11:17:00 PM
^that rockster is pretty hot, i've seen an black/orange one in the coleseum lot all the time last year. whoever designed them was defenitely a whacko, but its so fucking backwards it's actually attractive. these bikes make buells look normal. Johny V would be proud
9/13/2005 12:23:33 AM
^^ Yeah...It was a thumper. The dual was actually split right under the seat. Why do they do that? The two mufflers were physically different if you looked to the inside chamber, so I'm guessing each one had a purpose, but I never really knew what it was for.
