any opinions on the cheaper helmets being sold on ebay (50-70 dollar range)? i'm looking to upgrade to something else and retire my current one to passenger duty, passengers currently must wear an open face . i don't need the baddest thing out there at all, just a decent helmet that's a step up from what i have. current helmet is an OLD (like late 80's/early 90's) shoei. i figure about anything that's new despite the brand should be better than it? it's comfortable, just a little heavy and the venting is terrible. also getting pretty scratched/chipped.

team powersports has a fulmer thats snell rated, its very comfortable, not quite as padded as a Shoei but a good deal at $110. Iwas going to buy one but I sold my bike before I got one.
8/29/2005 8:59:24 PM
i'll pass on 110. i don't want to pay any more than 70-75 after shipping (if applicable).
8/29/2005 9:01:05 PM
might be hard to find someone selling a helmet that cheap... even if it is that old. good luck on finding it.
8/29/2005 9:04:26 PM
ive actually got one back at my parents house i never got rid of when i sold the bike, it was over $150 new and only used for a month at most, i'd cut you a deal on it but i wanna ride the bike sometime [Edited on August 29, 2005 at 9:10 PM. Reason : 2100th post damnit]

http://www.helmetharbor.com/estore/products.cfm?seriesid=Scorpion+EXO-400+Helmetsi have the flat black scorpion helmet with the mirror shield. black is not where it's at, flat black is. i hate graphic helmets too. the scorpion helmets have the feel and quality of a shoei but they dont charge you an arm and a leg, they actually break in to fit your head better like shoei and dont rattle around in the wind like my clunky and as heavy as my hjc that i had.
8/29/2005 11:49:03 PM
Have you tried Walmart? They actually have some stuff that looks halfway decent.http://www.walmart.com/catalog/search-ng.gsp?search_constraint=0&search_query=motorcycle+helmet&Continue.x=0&Continue.y=0&Continue=Find&ics=20&ico=0

If you look at completed listings you'll see several that sold in the price range you are looking. Local shops sell them for ~$275-$300, so it is a heck of a deal if you can find it for $75.[Edited on August 30, 2005 at 5:50 PM. Reason : s]

8/30/2005 10:02:37 PM
Well believe it or not but Wally-world now sells them. Bell's no less several less than $100. Saw them today in the Cary one, not sure if they all are carrying them.

Has anyone seen new scorpion helmets for other than regular price?
8/31/2005 9:00:56 PM
Rule #1 Never buy a used helmet. Even if it looks okay it may still have been through a wreck or eight.Rule #2 Helmets should be replaced every 5 years. After that point the foam starts to break down and it becomes much less effective. However, if your head is only worth $75 then go buy one off ebay. Just hope you dont get in a wreck and die/get seriously injured bc you cheaped out on the most important piece of safety equiptment.
8/31/2005 9:56:51 PM
^i agree on all counts
8/31/2005 10:08:11 PM
^^good points. how stringent are the DOT guidelines for helmets? what makes a 75 dollar helmet any less safe than a $200 helmet? i've just always assumed price differences were for the finish, comfort, weight, etc...
9/1/2005 3:53:25 PM
I gotta agree, go with a new helmet if want your brains intact...though I just bought April a used Shoei. You guys can figure that one out. lol [Edited on September 1, 2005 at 7:28 PM. Reason : .]

DOT is the easiest standard to pass. Snell is higher but the BSI standard (found on brands such as suomy) is the best. One of the magazines, i think it was Motor Cyclist, did a test to compare all the different standards a couple months ago. Try and find the articles online. It has some interesting information
9/1/2005 8:16:28 PM
i use my crashed helmets as passenger helmets.
9/2/2005 12:39:07 AM
ROFLyeah my hjc bitch helmet and scorpion are both snell approved.
