Not only does this dvd contain the original movie and the deleted scenes from the first dvd, which show you how much miramax compltely redid the original film before producing it,but it also contains a FULL, newly edited, dolby enhanced, digitally remastered cut of the film, as kevin wanted it originally.http://newsaskew.com/dvd/mallrats10/I'm REALLY excited about this. Oh, and clerks 2, "the passion of the clerks," starts rehearsal in a few weeks!http://viewaskew.com/news/clerks2/[Edited on August 29, 2005 at 9:21 AM. Reason : .]

They are actually doing a Clerks 2?I hope to god it doesn't suck.

I think if they toned down the really goofy humor and kept it like Clerks, it should be ok.

Awesome.I'm glad that even though they're making Clerks 2, we'll also be getting an animated Clerks movie. The animated series was excellent.

Actually Universal released this film, Miramax had absolutely nothing to do with it. Besides, Im fairly certain the theatrical cut is still the definitive cut, I mean this extended cut is supposed to have ALL of the deleted scenes added back in, and I seriously doubt that was Kevin Smiths original vision.

I'm not sure I completely understand your comment, but if you watch the firs mallrats dvd or read the explanations online, there's a whole beginning scene to the movie that was removed, which then leads to some other points of the film that had to be cut or dubbed. The initial scene includes the explanation for why svenning calls brodie his "neighbor," and some other things that don't make sense. Remember the guy who walks up to TS in the parking lot and says "hey aren't you the guy who got dumped by brandi svenning" or whatever? What he actually said was "hey aren't you the guy who tried to shoot the mayor?"Teh whole beginning scene was TS on the roof of a building, dressed in colonial garb with a fake rifle, talking to Brandi, etc. Someone sees him up on the building with his rifle and thinks he's trying to shoot the mayor, who is visiting Mr. svenning's little production that he's putting on. TS fucks up the whole thing, which is one of hte reasons that svenning hates TS so much.Brodie's shirt in the movie:is a compilation of the faces of characters who were completely removed from the movie, such as the mayor and her assistant. From what I remember, smith was made to redo the film and make all these changes by the production company before it was released.

What I mean is, if you were to ask Kevin Smith which version of Mallrats he prefers, Im fairly certain he would say the theatrical cut. Even he knows that the majority of those deleted scenes arent even remotely funny, so Im honestly not sure why he would sign off on putting all of them back in, unless this was Universals idea. I havent seen any info to indicate that the theatrical wasnt what he had in mind or that there has been a huge outcry for an extended cut...hell, seems like the majority of the Kevin Smith worshippers are 50/50 on buying this as well. Besides, notice its called an extended cut and not a directors cut...should be a hint. Also worth noting, this is a DVD-18, ie, dual-layered and dual-sided...it screams cheap. Universal apparently is notorious for releasing defective DVD-18 discs, so buyer beware.

i'd say the fact that he has publicly apologized for the theatrical cut means it probably wasn't really up his alley
8/31/2005 3:34:33 PM
^ yep

The shirt is actually a mashup of three guys who tried out for Brodie. And i think it was the governor, not the mayor.
8/31/2005 4:14:06 PM
are you sure? i really thought it was the people who were left out of the original beginnings. You may be right though, upon further searching. One common answer I've seen is that it was people who tried out for different roles, not necessarily brodies - but that may be the casebut I think you're right, it's the governor[Edited on August 31, 2005 at 4:19 PM. it's the gov'ri wasn't gonna mention thatthe network suits ask svenning if this is gonna be a blowup like the gov'rs event

I watched like 10 minutes of the TS on the roof beginning and I turned it off It wasn't very good at all. Hopefully, somehow, what they're about to put out will be better than that.

Bought the DVD tonight and watched the new version. What I found was crazy was just how much the movie was changed. All the scenes were still in order, but there were a lot of scenes added into the flow that change the main conflict of the story, but not the plot. The movie starts with the Governer's Ball (no story from Brodie) and an "assassination attempt". I actually enjoyed the new intro a lot (it felt like I was watching a completely different movie at first, to be honest), but I do miss the Cat in the Ass story. The interesting omission to the story in the new version is that they don't mention Julie Dwyer at all, even though she's mentioned in both Clerks and Chasing Amy (IIRC).It's like $17 this week at Best Buy. If you're a big fan of Mallrats, I'd suggest you pick it up.

The Q and A session under the extended version side special features was pretty funny. Kevin Smith mentioned Pot being the gateway drug to coke, heroin, ect.....then there was silence and the only person laughing was Jason Mews, it was classic. What was the deal with that french girl? She was born in Texas, but lived in Paris but talked crap about Canadians and Texans. One guy on the stage was like, "I'm from Texas." Haha, I was waiting for the audience to stone her.
