You killed my wife.Vengeance is me killing you to make myself feel better.Punishment is me killing you to make you feel worse. And dead.
8/27/2005 11:33:09 PM
but punishing makes you feel better. so its still vengance.

Revenge is one of the more fun and exciting guilty pleasures
8/27/2005 11:53:47 PM
why so guilty? everyone agrees its great.

Punishment makes everyone feel better. The victim gets revenge, everyone else gets reminded of reasons not to do the crime, and the perpetrator gets punishment! Everyone is happy!

orrrrrrr notrevenge is cyclical. punishment, if done correctly, lessens the chance that the crime will be committed again.

Perhaps some people see their revenge as a form of justice. You kill my wife in cold blood, and so I kill you back. I've gotten my revenge, but in the process hasn't a murderer been punished? Has justice not been served? Now you could definitely argue that I am also a murderer, but was my action not justified? And for the sake of argument, let's say you get taken to court and they decide your punishment should be death. Haven't I just saved the system precious time and resources by giving you the punishment you had coming to you anyway?I'm not saying that murder is the answer to every problem. Somebody had a point that revenge could easily become cyclical. Perhaps the best way for maximizing both justice and vengence is simply forcing the perpetrator to pay compensation. It doesn't necessarily have to be the Code of Hammurabi compensation, maybe monetary compensation, or some sort of servtitude (as in, you are forced to be the victim's servant for a set number of years). The thing I want to steer away from is just giving jail time for everything. Now I will conceed that there are some mother fuckers out there who are just plain ape shit insane and need to be locked away in a padded cell for everybody's safety, but how is locking away somebody for three years truly punishing them? I suppose the idea is that their freedom is limited and that they're suppose to "lose" those years of their lives, but in all honesty, are they really punished? They get free meals every day, warm beds to sleep on, and depending on how good you act you even get to participate in some recreational activities. And who pays for all of that? Not the prisoner, but you the tax payer. If somebody is suppose to be punished, why is it that they essentially get to live in a 4-star hotel while you pick up the tab? I just think that the old "lock'em up and throw away the key" method is no longer as effective as it was intended to be. Some people probably don't even care that they go to jail, and will probably just commit more crimes when they get out. While the idea of rehabillitation is noble, I think it's a bit naive, and I certainly doubt that it will work on everybody. Some people just don't want to be helped.
