okay my friends roommates computer on campus is acting really weird. it says its connected to the internet but the IP address wont follow through. i did the whole ipconfig stuff and nothing. should i just put in the IP address myself instead of say to automatically find it?

Definitely don't want to make up your own IP address. At least, you won't solve anything. At worst, you'll be taking an IP address from someone that's already using it, and cause them problems, too.If you've not tried doing so yet, swap his/her ethernet cable with one that you know is working, and see if they've got a connection. Secondly, I'd run a virus scan on the computer, and see if it's been hacked (ResNet used to temporarily turn off people that were virus-infected, I don't know if this is still true).I'd also go into the device manager, uninstall the NIC, and reboot. Let Windows detect it again, and refresh the NIC driver. If that doesn't work, give ResNet a call on Monday, 515-HELP, and let someone double-check it in person. Chances are, it'll either be a really simple thing to fix, or something that's a bit complicated (and not so easy to diagnose by remote ).
