I got a bunch of 3500xl that keep becoming unresponsive and the need the password reset on them. I looked up what I could online but I didn't find much. I load up hyper terminal with the console cable hooked up and don't get a prompt on any of them. I think they all need new firmware. Does anyone know another way to get into them? Or maybe what I'm doing wrong? I set all the options on cisco's page for hyperterminal and made sure the serial port was enabled in bios and bi-directional.

no a roll-over cable...if you look at the color of the wires a ethernet cable has both connectors with the same color pattern...a cross-over cable will have the orange and green wires reversed... and a roll-over cable will have all the wires reversed. In order to get into a router u need a roll-over cable

Power cycle, break in the console during boot so it goes in to rommon. Set the config register so it boots the default or minimum config thus bypassing the configuration with the password.

Some switches don't support a software break in the console. I don't remember about the 3500xl specifically, but you might have to press and hold the MODE button (if it has one?) for like 10 seconds after you power it on, when you let go, it should break into rommon.

Thats from memory, let me know if it works, or if thats what you were asking for.

What do you mean when you say "unresponsive?" can you ping the switch (assuming it's configured with a management IP address)? Also, If you can't get in through the console, how do you know you need the password reset on them?

The isp for my complex can't login for remote management. The switches have stopped letting traffic through and powercycling does nothing. I held the mode button, unplugged it, replugged it, and let go of the mode button after light #1 went out. Then when I tried to bring up the hyper terminal, I couldn't get a prompt from any of the switches. I have no idea how I'm gonna reset the password without getting to a prompt, that's what I need help with. Oh, and last night, they decided one of the switches was broken and have fedex'd me 1 replacement but I'm pretty sure atleast 3 are down. H4x'd and locked out of our own shit because we use OLD firmware that the source was leaked for? Probably.

Verify that you have your PC/console set up correctly by trying to console into a switch that is working.
