8/15/2005 12:12:42 PM
It's generally in bad taste to broadcast your salary.
8/15/2005 12:20:19 PM
Major BS Chemical Eng, BA Chem., MBASalary Average ChE starting is like $53kish I think. I was significantly above that. And have gotten three raises since. And my bonus last year was somewhere around $10k. Prefer not to list exact numbers. But I work my ass off. Petro is good as long as you don't mind working.[Edited on August 15, 2005 at 12:22 PM. while i agree it is in bad taste to disclose your salarythats what the thread is aboutso i don't really see the point in posting in here if you're not going to post a valuewith that saidi am still in school so i have no starting salary yet for engineers, does grad school have a big effect on your salary?
8/15/2005 12:25:26 PM
^depends on your field. i know in petro. for downstream (refineries, chem plants, etc) a master's won't help much over a BS. but in upstream (exploration and production) and r&d, it will. not sure how much starting out... maybe like $7-10k over a BS depending on the area and company. over the years though, that would probably even out. most PhD ChE's in upstream or r&d petro. companies start at like $80-$85k. in downstream, about the only advanced degree that really does help you out is a MBA. ill speak from a computer engineering side of things:when i was searching for a job about 1.5 years ago, there were several companies that had no interest in talking with you unless you had a master's degree. for example, i spoke with Intel at a career fair...I had 2 years of experience due to co-oping, so they said that is just as good, if not better then a masters degree....however, once I got put in "the system", I was contacted and told that they had no interest in hiring people without masters degrees.for most companies, like Queti said, you can expect about $7-10k more then an undergrad. I know at my company, they typically pay more then average for undergrad degrees, but less then average for masters....so it really depends on what company is it.[Edited on August 15, 2005 at 12:41 PM. In the pharmaceutical industry, for upsteam you better have an advanced degree. I found that out the hard way [Edited on August 15, 2005 at 1:11 PM. Reason : ed]

what the hell would you consider upstream in a pharma company?I interviewed for a Research Scientist position in my company a couple of weeks ago, and I only have a BS
8/15/2005 1:23:46 PM
Drug discovery.I mean yeah you can work as a lab tech but thats not really what I was going after.I take it you are tired of validation too?
8/15/2005 1:24:56 PM
haven't decided yet. I won't get that RS III position, but they're opening a couple Tech Transfer Engineer positions too, which would combine process development work with process validation = $texas
8/15/2005 1:43:34 PM
Major: BS in Biochemistry and BiologyStarting Salary: $29,000.. but I'm only a temp so I don't get benefits and I'm paid hourly. I've been looking at jobs for over a year now and everything I'm interested in requires 3+ years experience or a masters. It's like there's a gap... you either do real work and need a masters, or you wash dishes and need a hs diploma.

After I win Wednesday's powerball contest, I'll be making:Job: RetiredSalary: $0I change my mind, NC should get a lottery. I buy 2 powerball tickets for $2 once a week (in missouri). It's actually fun to sit and think what you would do with the money, although you know you're not winning. But damn, I could use $10 mil or whatever the jackpot is right now. 2 weeks ago it was 90 some mil.
8/15/2005 4:01:07 PM
Major: B.S. Computer ScienceStarting Salary: a little above the average + all expenses paid typically monday -> thursday but some weeks monday -> friday because of travel - free vacations after a year or 2 because of all of the built up miles with AA / points with marriot and at times a few hilton / points with hertz - it's hard for me to say how much it's really worth but about 110 extra each week give or take a few - if you count the free vacations flown first class then that's an extra few thousand but you don't get crazy points until you have top tier status and i'm almost there

For those on salary making 50+/year, how many hours a week do you average?
8/15/2005 11:46:36 PM
would have been sweet to make 50k+ starting. hopefully i can get than next time around. Also, location makes a difference. 50k in NC is a lot, while it is not in california.
8/16/2005 12:20:43 AM
^ what he said - thats why I thought to post after someone mentioned living in a high cost city - if you can make 50k without much in the way of living costs here in NC then you are doing pretty good in my book
8/16/2005 2:15:19 AM
my average work week is 40-45hrs.....what is the killer for me is the commute (NOVA) which ends up being 2-3hrs/day
