we have one router, which is hooked to my roommates computer, how do splice it to mine so i can get a connection? we tried some stuff today but according to my pc i was connected to the internet, but i could not browse the web. this is cable internet - road runner.

do you mean one modem? because a router would be the solution to THAT problem. if you already have a router, you shouldn't need to splice anything, just configure it correctly. most likely, if the router isn't provided by the cable company, they won't help you configure it. you could probably find out what settings you need though, even though they won't walk you through how to enter them on that particular router.

If it is a router provided by the cable/dsl company, then they should support it. if however you only have a cable/dsl modem, and no router, you'll need to get one.

dude, i really can't explain the situation correctly since i don't know what is the deal with the internet. man, this situation sucks. i think the router came form the comppany, but i really don't know. if it did not, can you explain a little more about what to do. i desperately need help, b/c i am getting pised by the minute just thinking about it and i don't want to get really mad and start a feud in the apt over some bs.

ah man, I haven't configured mine in forever. to access the configuration on most routers though, you'll open your web browser and enter 192.168.1.1 into the adress bar. After that it SHOULD prompt you for a password. If it does and your roomate doesn't remember it or something, then you can either call your cable company, hope they provided it and set the password when they installed it, OR reset the router by finding and depressing the reset switch on the back. This could erase whatever configuration is allowing your roomate's computer to work on it though, so don't do it unless you're compltely out of options and about to hurt someone.

If it doesn't prompt him for a password OR he remembers it OR you have the manual which tells you what the default password is, you can try changing some configuration. It's possible the router has mac adress limiting turned on. This is could be your problem especially if you're connecting wirelessly. If you're connecting by wire, this probably isn't your problem, but check anyways.

As to weather it's a router or a modem - does it have lots of ethernet ports on the back, or just one that runs to your roomate's computer?

well try logging into it. see what that brings up. play around with the security settings and such. see if there's mac adress filtering turned on. see if there's a connections limit or something. just look through it. you can always try contacting the cable people or emailing the support for whoever made the router. what brand is it by the way?
