ps- why wont my wireless router work when i have my firewall up, i've always thought firewalls were gay but now it wont even let me connect to the net

first off, tell us what router you have, what wireless adapter you're using or if you're using internal laptop wireless, and what firewall you're using.

For security WPA > WEP > none

Most routers come with an ip address,software, or some GUI to help you set up the WEP. My wireless router has an IP Address that sends me straight to the adminstrative stuff. Do a google search on your router, or go to the manufacturers website.

you should really consider a firewall since it's the best thing at stopping viruses and worms

To configure your router, open your browser and enter into the address 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. Then type in your password, or if you haven't changed the password then the default is admin.

if you don't know anything about it, more than likely it's 192.168.1.1

leave the username field blank, and put "admin" in for the password.

then there's lots of good things in there, like authentication and security, for you to fuck up.

Most routers have a Router Management/Configuration tool. All you do is type in your router's IP address preceded by http:// into the address bar in a web browser.

If you don't know the IP addy of the router, go in command prompt and type "ipconfig" and look at the address for 'Default Gateway'

well...if you see the same machine logged on for days/weeks then you have reason to worry...otherwise...philosophically, I don't see why anyone would restrict access to the Internet in 2005.

Your router should be able to tell you what devices are connected to it and if one of them isn't yours then block that shit.

My roommate has a wireless router from D-Link and I've never dealt with wireless and either has he. Which settings do you use on NCSU's connection there are options like Static IP, Dynamic IP, Big Pond, PPoPe(or something like that). We could not get either of our laptops to recognize the router. When we hard wired into it, it worked fine but how do we get it working on the schools internet?

so When I looked at my DHCP clients table I see my computer and I see another address that Im assuming is my wireless adapter for my xbox. Most of the time its just those 2 but every now and then when I look I see a 3rd address. hmmmmmm ok

WEP and WPA are both trivial to crack in many cases-- and nothing's going to look worse than illegal activity originating from your SECURE wireless network. you might as well leave it open, you can't keep the bad guys out, and if you've ever sat down somewhere and looked for open wireless, you owe a wireless karma debt to society ok

ehh i have mine set to block/allow clients based on mac addresses instead of all the WEP/WAP bullshit. both of those can fairly easily be cracked with programs that are available for free. i'm not sure if using a mac address is any more or less secure, but so far i havent seen anybody else using my shit and i dont have to deal with the damn keys

I visited my girlfriend at UNCG yesterday and she picked up at least 3 wireless networks all of which were unsecured, I lol'ed
