Windows Vista already has a virus specially made for it.

Personally, I think hackers should wait until MS rolls it out before they release more.

He actually wrote a shell script that does nothing besides using the shell to execute commands.

Oh noes!

If you qualify that as a virus.

Then Linux is most severely fucked.

It could be a good angle is MS removes YET ANOTHER "key" feature from the upcoming OS.

^^ what

it infects other shell scripts with a non-malicious payload, ie. a proof of concept...making it fairly trivial to convert to something malicious. it's self-replicating, so it qualifies as a virus, malicious or not. less than 5 minutes of googling, and here you go....there's even a psuedo-EPO version of it (i guess it's as EPO as you can be in a script)....

(if a mod cares that i posted this, just edit it out...considering the OS isn't even really out, i don't see a problem with it)

and sandsanta, if i'm misunderstanding the point of your post, just let me know....and feel free to clarify.

Follow-up:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/08/08/monad_vista/

And Microsoft takes out YET ANOTHER feature Windows Vista was supposed to have.

Quote :
""Monad will not be included in the final version of Windows Vista," said Stephen Toulouse, a program manager in a posting to Microsoft's Security Response Centre's blog. "Monad is being considered for the Windows Operating system platform for the next three to five years. So these potential viruses do not affect Windows Vista or any other version of Windows if 'Monad' has not been installed on the system.""

I wonder what else they will take out before it ships.

likely.

This product keeps being delayed and the more we learn about it, the more they say will not make it to the end product.

Of course, people will buy it just because it is the "new Windows."

monad was cut from vista before it was even called vista....not because of this - just so everyone is clear...

Nintool

it was my understanding that this "virus" couldn't garner extra access rights.

Basically, you'd be in a heap of trouble only if the monad shell you created had admin rights on the local machine.

Otherwise no.

they should make vista a minimalist operating system

remove all that shit we don't use. let us have control over what we want installed.

Christ, when will they actually have a decent shell? I friggin' hate trying to get anything accomplished at the command shell prompt.

yeah, this is how most email-borne virii work today, and the biggest reason they work so well is because on a huge portion of windows systems in existance the user is already a local admin, and when they accidentally run the script it runs in that local admin user's context. so, it can do pretty much whatever it works. so far i haven't seen anything to the contrary saying that MS has made vista easier to run decently as a non-priveledged user, so i'm thinking it'll probably work just as well. of course i'd welcome any improvements in this area, because when it all boils down to it, that's the difference between windows and other decently multi-user environments, and besides the fact that it's a bigger target, that's THE reason that so many virii exist and thrive on the windows platform.
