Has anyone burned a DVD using a double-layer burner? The DVDs are a little pricey and I am wondering if anyone thinks it's worth trying...

Ive heard (and I dont doubt) they are pretty unreliable, and besides you can get 4 single layer R's for the price of 1 doublelayer, that and the burn speeds for DL dont make it worhwhile in the time department. Id stick to older more proven single layer burning, and with any luck DL will force prices on the rest to go down


Besides, it wont be long before a new CD formats come out that can hold like 15 or 20GB ("Bluray" or "HDTV DVD" or something like that, forget the name)

I have a question.... is it possible to "back up" a DVD that is 8.7 GB (Say, "Team America", for instance) using only 4.7 GB disc DVD-R's?


I had to go out and buy the DVD DL's to do it becuase I have no idea if I can compress the data into 4.7 GB. I use nero, and it has the "recode" function... but I really have no clue in hell what it does or how to use it.


I really hate to keep buying these Dual Layer DVD-R's, but most DVD's nowadays are 8.7 GB

^Yeah you could do that but I don't think it would work with a traditional "insert DVD into drive -> hit copy" method. You could burn the DVD as an iso image, use some software to split it however you want, then burn it back.

In that "recode" thing I actually recoded the entire movie onto my HD (Whatever that means) and I set it to fit onto a 4.7 GB disc.... even though it was a 8.7 GB movie. It completed the recoding and said the file was 4.7 GB of data... but when I tried to burn it, it still asked me to put in a 4.7 GB Dual/Double Layer disc... said a DVD-R wouldnt' work

If I have a dual layer dvd and use a program like dvd clone to split it into two single layer discs, does a standard home theater dvd player recongize the second disc automatically and start playing where the first left off or do i need do do anything special to it so it is recognized?
