Well, it's looking like I'm going to have a lot more free time, and I need the money.

I do a lot of Honda, Nissan, Mazda, and Toyota wrenching, but I'll mess with just about anything except German shit requiring lots of specialty tools.

I work on a lot of American cars and trucks as well.

Gimme a holler if you need a hand or a job done and you either don't have the time to do it yourself, don't know how, or don't have the money to take it to a shop.

Oh and do you know how to work on Rx-7's? I'm just waiting for my clutch to shit on me, and that's a job that's definately beyond my abilities. My mechanic is moving away in September so maybe I could use you at some point. I may need some bushings replaced too.

I'm going to need a new timing belt put on soon too, but thats like a weekend's worth of work. Might have to contract some help. I think I've pissed off james with the hitch project

Is the timing belt THAT hard to do on the 'zu engines?

I haven't done one of their 3.2/3.5 belts, but rarely should a belt take that long to do. I can usually knock out the harder ones in less than 6 hours, unless I'm working with one adjustable wrench, a pair of pliers, and a hammer. Then it takes a little longer.

What hours do you work? Where?

zu 3.2/3.5 belt isn't that bad. timing is a little tricky since they fire off on an odd cylinder and you've got 2 cams to get right, but overall not bad. easily doable in a day. bearings shouldn't take any longer than 2-3 hours on it assuming the damn little brass screws that hold the the threaded preload ring into place on the spindle aren't frozen. tad, ditch those drive flanges while you're at it if you don't have TOD.

2 cams ain't bad compared to 4, but you say firing off an odd cylinder...whatchu mean? I know these engines are 75 degree vees as opposed to the majority of v6's being 60...what else is different?

Gotcha. Primary TDC index (for ECM) occurs off of one of those cylinders. Still an end cylinder, though.

I wonder why they chose a 75 degree angle...are the crank throws staggered like they are in a 90 deg. v6?

I've got TOD. In fact, I'm currently researching how I can plugin to the TOD computer so I can put a 5 position switch on the dash that dials in the torque to the front. 0/15/30/50%(4hi)/Auto(Normal TOD).

zx, I'll get the parts for the bearings before to long and let you know. Timing belt can wait for another 7k miles or so.

^^beats the hell out of me... isuzu always has been a bit of an odd breed. those are good motors, but have somewhat delicate bottom ends. almost every one that came in with major issues at thompson had a rod knock. 2 came in with the cranks in half, sticking out of the block haha. the two 3.5's Tuite has killed were bearing failures also. unlike the 2.3/2.6 which i'm convinced you could run dry of oil for minutes on end at 7k and the crank/mains/cons would just laugh at you.
^that should be doable i would think. people have been coming up with similar things to control active suspensions and other tcs's for years, so i would think that should be doable.

I can attest to the 2.8 running oil-less. I drove my 89 troop from Raleigh all the way to Hillsborough before realizing I had lost my oil drain plug and was running the engine dry.

on the 3.5, I change the oil religiously every 2500-3000 miles with sythetic, replace the PCV and clean the EGR and intakes. I was told by the Isuzu reps that these steps were the best things I could do to avoid the #6 cylinder rod bearing seizing up on me.

Looked at hgtran's car yesterday. Nice, clean '95 Avalon. Complaints: white smoke on startup, excessive oil consumption. The car wouldn't smoke for us yesterday, though. Runs great.

Just for the hell of it, I did a compression test and found all cylinders to be at about 220lbs. Plugs look great. Some oil in the plenum. None in the breather hose or intake hose. PCV valve looks brand new. Cleaned it anyway. Now we'll see if oil consumption continues. It's just like the damn PCV valve is stuck open somewhat and is pulling mad oil at high vacuum.

Either that or valve guides are somewhat worn, or the stem seals are hard as brickbats. The 3.0 is an engine subject to the sludging that's happened on a lot of Camrys and Avalons, and I've seen more than a few that smoke on startup because of this.

Depends on if I have to pull the rotors to have them turned (thus requiring repacking the bearings and replacing the seals) or replaced (requiring removal and installation/packing bearings and seals).

If you don't have ANY shudder when braking, and you just need your pads swapped out and the faces of your rotors roughed, I'll do it for 25 bucks plus cost of pads (unless you go out and buy them).

All the rest, and it adds up. Turning rotors usually costs 10-12 bucks apiece, depending on where you go. Removal and installation of rotors and pads (not counting turning of rotors) and packing the bearings...I'll do for 50 bucks plus parts.
