I just put together a new computer and when I go to control panel and Network connections, my NIC sais its enabled and its connected but I can't log onto aim or the internet. The onboard NIC on my motherboard is disabled and I already downloaded the drivers. If anyone has any tips on how I can fix this problem I'd really appreciate it.

I do have one, but when I try to "repair" the NIC it sais that there is an error because it won't renew the IP address.

I tried to release and renew the IP in the command prompt but it said that it was unable to contact the DHCP server and that my request timed out.

can you get on with another computer to make sure it's not your connection that's not really messed up?

try and ping a machine on your network to see if it is your connection/router or your software/hardware

sounds like either a connectivity issue or flaky router....if you have other computers on the network (or know it IP and subnet ranges) you can set it static and try and ping the router maybe?

I hooked the ethernet cable into another computer and it worked fine so I'm pretty sure its software/Hardware.

My subnet mask is 255.255.000.000, isn't it supposed to be 255.255.255.000?

I set my TCP/IP properties to "Obtain an IP address automatically" yet my subnet mask still comes up at 255.255.000.000

is this a home network or something like resnet?

if it's your own network, try hardcoding your ip address, then try pinging stuff on the network.

why not take out the NIC and use the onboard ethernet?

is your router set up to only allow certain MAC addresses on the network? If so you need to add your new NIC's MAC to the approved list.
