just fucking torque down some motor mount bolts? on of my friends who is a shoddy mechanic and is very lazy helped me put them in but didn't bother to tell me he didn't have a torque wrench. anyway, i can't drive it until i torque them to 85. please someone help. it should only take like, 10 mins at most.

you dont need a torque wrench for 85.just get a breaker bar or cheater pipe on a ratchet and crank em.

7/29/2005 1:56:13 PM
it's 54 to cary i thinkthat or the exit to cary town blvd
7/29/2005 1:58:41 PM
did your 'shoddy mechanic' friend tighten the fuck out of them when he put them or not? that's really all that needs to be done.
7/29/2005 1:58:43 PM
^^ Agreed, As long as their tight.. I mean as tight as anyone normal person can get them, they should be fine. Tight, or tighter than 85 is good.
7/29/2005 2:29:05 PM
Skack - no I did not get rid of the DSM.
7/29/2005 2:54:28 PM

sorry guys, lost internet. thanks. i will be talking to some of you about this problem. i appreciate it. and yes, i did sell my dsm.[Edited on July 30, 2005 at 10:23 AM. Reason : and they aren't tight, but my "friend" used red locktight on it. if he ruined it, i'mma be mad.]
7/30/2005 10:22:10 AM
Apparently "tight" isn't enough, because we made them pretty damn tight. Didn't use a torque wrench though or even a large wrench, so I'm sure they could get tighter. There is some majorly loud "clunking" noise going on when engaging the clutch in 1st and 2nd. It isn't the noise of the clutch engaging, because I can hear that as well. And it's coming from the passenger side where the motor mounts are. The transmission is on the driver's side btw. It basically sounds like the motor mounts are banging around in there. I really don't want to break a bolt or MM. So, I'm going to try to get them back on correctly with some SRT owners this morning. If not, we'll give you a call MaximaDrvr. Thanks guys.[Edited on July 30, 2005 at 10:26 AM. Reason : Sucks to get them off and then find out you have no torque wrench. ]

85 ft/lbs isnt that much, you should be able to do that easily with a 36" breaker bar, thats only 28# of pulling force, 42# with a 24" bar.its easy to tell what it is, just pop the hood, pull the parking brake and try to pull forward, you'll see what moves. make sure all the washers/spacers etc are there and that the bolts arent just pulling tight on the shoulder, i've done that before[Edited on July 31, 2005 at 11:51 AM. Yeah, we got it done and everything is working great. Kind of odd how our "friend" was like (In a sarcastic voice):"Yeah you can just keep tightening them until you snap the heads off the bolts."This was when I mentioned that the service manual says to torque them to 85. Apparently the service manual is wrong. Well, dumbfuck, they didn't snap.
