so my 98 honda accord had some light come on the other day and it turns out to be the malfunction light which turns out to come on when "the engines emissions control systems may have a problem"whats a good place to get this fixed at and around how much should it cost

the "malfunction" light came on and i looked in the manual and all it said is that something with the emissions is wrong and it could mess up my engine if i drive it like that for long, plus it said my fuel economny could be shitty until i fix itidk whats wrong with it, i guess i'll have to find a mechanic and let him tell me

"something may be wrong with the emissions" could be a whole lot of things.
7/26/2005 11:14:46 AM
i'd put money on the sensor

Have you checked your muffler bearings? When they go bad all hell breaks loose. Mike

Seriously, give Rex @ Happy Jap's a call. His shop is in Cary, over on Johnson St diagonally behind Woody's.Phone: 467-2884. Tell him Superfly sent you.

isnt that car OBDII? I think a few people on here have an OBDII reader and might be willing to pull codes for you. BUt it shouldnt cost more than $100 or so to have a mechanic read and diagnoseit for you. Wish I could help, but my reader/computer does not do OBDII cars.Good luck!

I usually go to El Rodeo if I'm in the mood for an emissions problem.
7/26/2005 3:22:54 PM
yeah i'm pretty sure its the sensor the manual mentioned something about thathaha its so fucking hot today the drive to cookout with my ac on made my gasometer noticeably go down in like 5 minutes of driving
7/26/2005 4:14:29 PM
Autozone will pull codes for free. Take it there and tell us what code you get.
7/26/2005 4:17:36 PM
^dude your the mani'll get that code right quick
7/26/2005 6:12:04 PM
YES! then 30 more kids can make 30 more guesses.

P0-420he said i need a new 90 dollar oxygen sensor and that i would lose 2-3 mpg of gas until i got it fixed...but he said since i got a honda it wont be TOO bad
7/26/2005 6:59:13 PM
PO420 catalyst efficiency below threshhold or whateverhappens all the time, clear the code if he didnt do it for you and start running a higher grade gasif it recurs then, have the cat checked at any muffler shop and then if it is working properly replace the downstream O2 first[Edited on July 26, 2005 at 7:03 PM. so dont get the oxygen sensor first?[Edited on July 26, 2005 at 7:17 PM. Reason : you are saying do all that before oxygen sensor to make sure and fix the right thing?]
7/26/2005 7:15:41 PM
yeah exactly, do that first. i forgot how rich we all are.[Edited on July 26, 2005 at 7:18 PM. Reason : what dont you understand?]
7/26/2005 7:17:49 PM
i'm confused cause the guy said just get a new sensor but it sounds like you are saying do the gas thing firsti'm just confused cause i'm been
7/26/2005 7:29:59 PM
lolok heres the dealyoull have more money for if you have the code cleared and the higher grade gas fixes itbut check it out, even if it dosent fix it, you still have more $ for !!1see where i am going here, cheapest things first[Edited on July 26, 2005 at 7:47 PM. Reason : fuck what "the guy" said]
7/26/2005 7:46:51 PM
cool what does getting the higher grade gas do to fix it?
7/26/2005 7:49:40 PM
every car runs better, and cleaner on high grade gas. noone can prove otherwise and thats the way it is cause I SAID SO.but really, it has less sulphur and shit
7/26/2005 7:54:06 PM
^ listen to the man Josh.
7/26/2005 9:45:51 PM
ok i'm about to fill up my tank pretty much from empty with premium...how long does it take for the light to go off?
7/28/2005 5:34:40 PM
youll have to have it reset. take it back to autozone and have them clear the code after you fill up and drive a while.
7/28/2005 6:03:06 PM
gas mileage seems off, going into some place a friend told me that hnas a better computer than autozone so i can get it narrowed down to exactly what the problem is so i dont fix the wroong thing
