I was doing a midi-search and one page in particular started to bombard me with popups. I canceled, and ran a Norton AntiVirus scan on my C-drive. It turned out some at-risk files and allowed me to select and delete them. I selected all and hit delete, and then got this window:Now, I can't open the borders any further, so where it says "Delete fa...," I can only presume it reads "Delete failed." If this is the case, why? I'd like to delete these but the only option is to either exclude or skip them, in which case, will they just be left alone and will I be getting these random, annoying pop-ups wherever I'm surfing? They've started already.[Edited on June 18, 2005 at 3:20 PM. Reason : .]

go into safe mode and run the scan. the reason they aren't deleting is b/c they're running

How do you switch it to safe mode?

I rebooted the computer in safe mode, ran another scan, and found 13 infected files. Of them, only five could not be deleted, and I was faced with a similar window where I had to choose either to exclude or skip. I clicked on the Help file to explain what happens when I exclude a threat, found out that not what I wanted to do, so I chose to skip, and then I got a window telling me that not all of the files were deleted (duh). Now what am I supposed to do? I'm still getting random popups and if there is still something on my system, there's no limit to what it might be doing besides popups.

Download a program called "HiJack This". Don't attempt it yourself... you can really fuck stuff up using it if you just go deleting random stuffhttp://computercops.biz/zx/Merijn/hijackthis.zipPost a log on a website that deals with that stuff. For instancehttp://forums.thetechguys.com/ where it says "HiJack This Logs"Some of your programs are obviously recopying themselves, which means you're gonna have to find and delete some folders (usually hidden folders) to get rid of it. Good luck. The one I always used was called "That Computer Guy's Help Forum" but I googled it and couldn't find it. I dunno if it's still around. Some of those get so busy they'll ignore you, but you'll find one that will help. You could try to post a log here, but I'm not sure if anyone's fluent enough to help you. I know I'm certainly not[Edited on June 19, 2005 at 12:50 PM. Reason : sdfds]

I wish I had read your post before I attempted deleting things. This is what I've managed to do so far:I deleted Temporary Internet Files, online and offline, deleted Cookies and cleared the History, then I used the Disk Cleanup and then Defragged, and looked at the report. On it, they gave a list of files that were defragged, including one under my Program Files. This raised my eyebrow and I looked carefully at the file name; it reminded me of the generator for the pop ups. I went to Windows Explorer, located the folder and attempted to delete it. After several attempts, I reordered the program files by date of creation and found that several folders were created within minutes of the folder I wanted to delete. I also recognized these names and deleted them successfully. After that, I somehow was able to delete the first folder. Then I emptied the Recycle Bin and rebooted. Within minutes of resuming my research paper, I found a popup on my screen (not online - just a warning window):

Hmm. That is definetely one of your problems. Maybe someone else can help you with what to do on that. Check out this thread. This is supposedly the easiest method of removal for 180searchassistanthttp://www.sawtoothdistortion.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=36I'd run that now if you can, and see what happens. That may get rid of it altogether. Try it in Normal Mode first, then, If I were you, I'd run it again in safe mode just to be sure it deletes it all.Chances are it's not just that bugging your system though. Do you remember some of the names of the programs AdAware couldn't get rid of? Was it just this 180 search? I wouldn't trust this popup thing you're getting shown above to remove it. Chances are, it won't. Try that link above and see what happens... I've never had this problem, but apparently a lot of people have and said the download on the link above fixes it

Darn it, I'm sure there were at least three names I've been seeing, but I never wrote them all down. If any more come up, I'll do that, but as is I'll go to that site when I can. Right now I'm busy with a paper, but after this week and finals next week, I'll be able to attack this.
