How in the world does this counter work?!? Does it work at all?

I ask because I can create a thread, and then click on the link to view it, and the counter does not increment. I can also view the thread via another username, and the counter still does not increment. Would someone mind explaining this functionality to me?

I assume that if the same IP address visits the thread twice or more in a row, the counter doesn't increment.

all views are counted, but the views are only updated at two times:

1. when the thread is replied to
2. when the thread hasn't been viewed for a while (a few hours) and the server feels that no one will be replying soon.

we do this to speed up the site.
