So the images are converted to 72 DPI and also restricted to a maximum pixel width, it appears. If a 72 DPI image that is within the width restriction is uploaded, it then will not be further compressed, right? or is there actually a JPG compression that is occurring, no matter what the width/length and resolution which trims down filesize?

there is a shit load of compression going on with the images. and 72ppi means jack.
