Cass, you look just like a girl I see running down Tryon Rd all the time. I honk my horn at her cause she so fine.
10/28/2011 8:21:35 AM
i actually went running for the first time in 3 weeks yesterday but only got about 2.5 miles out and was done. i think i was too dehydrated when i started running and i got some nasty muscle cramps around my rib cage

I'm looking for some recommendations on Magazines or blogs focused on men's fitness. I've been running mainly for cardio and have now hit a plateau with my weight loss and need some inspiration to get out of bed early and run. Hiking and biking make up for the rest of it, and I have to do both of those with my kid in tow, which adds an extra 30 lbs to my load. I was doing a lot of strength training at a gym but had to drop the membership and haven't found a good solution at home or outdoors.I've had a subscription to Men's Health before, but wasn't really happy with it. I'm hoping if I can find some good reading material to replace the Bon Apetit and Saveur in the bathroom, it'll give me that incentive to stop hitting the snooze in the morning.

I've been stressed the fuck out lately and didn't go to the gym at all last week opting for sleep instead. I also probably ate my weight in food too. Stress is shit to me! But, one good thing, my belt feeling tighter motivated me enough to wake up at 5am for the gym today. I think that's progress, hopefully when I get to my maintenance weight I will keep that trigger instead of letting it slide far too long. I'm really fucking tired though. [Edited on October 31, 2011 at 9:35 AM. Reason : lerr]
10/31/2011 9:35:03 AM
No offense, but that's not really progress. Stress is always going to exist, you need to work on changing your response (sleeping + eating) to something more positive.
10/31/2011 9:50:04 AM
I need to work on my grip endurance. It's becoming a limiting factor. I'd hoped it would improve along with everything else, but it's lagging behind. I tried rock climbing recently and after a few climbs my hands pretty much stopped working. This morning I was having a rough time after a workout with a bunch of pullups and KB swings. So, bar hang, farmer's walk ... what else?
10/31/2011 10:17:34 AM
hitting a big plateau at 42-43# lost seems like i won't be dropping further than this point in the foreseeable future.
10/31/2011 11:03:32 AM
why?
10/31/2011 11:09:08 AM
It may not be a big deal but I'm happy the stress didn't drown me to my old fat weight which it has before. Sooooo the fact that I recognized the issue and still felt the need to correct it is a major improvement for me. And fuck it. I'm gonna take and pat on the back I can get. But yeah. I need to react before the consequences.
10/31/2011 12:48:32 PM
^^^^ I'm the same way... grip strength and endurance is the limiter on my dead lifts and some other things like that. I'm just going to get some grip trainers, I think.
10/31/2011 12:57:47 PM
My grip has gotten a lot better since I started. Strength doesn't really limit me on anything anymore when I'm fresh. It just doesn't last as long as I need it to. And I know my endurance has also improved, just not as fast as I want/need.

wohoo! hit my goal weight this morning! 132 pounds
11/2/2011 9:27:33 AM
Congrats Cass, that's really impressive. Are you going to come up with a new goal or maintain?
11/2/2011 9:28:33 AM
probably aiming for 130 pounds now and then will figure things out from there. i don't want to lose too much more weight before the wedding so once i figure out where my body is happy maintaining then i will move into maintenance mode. at this point, i figure if i'm still losing then my body is okay with that.
11/2/2011 9:36:57 AM
woohoo, goals being met in this thread

That study is both depressing and retarded. It basically insinuates that the only reason to get oneself into shape is to attract the opposite (or same!) sex. Thus, if you have a mate, there's no reason to lose your spare tire. The depressing part is that that's probably the mindset of half the country. The retarded part is how fucked that mindset is.

^^ Agreed.Oddly, I lose weight when I'm in a relationship. I think I'm more mindful of snacking. And I go out drinking with the girls a lot less. That's probably the main culprit. Seems very disrespectful to your partner to let yourself go once you're in a relationship. I think you should try harder once you're in the relationship ... don't give them a reason to feel like they're not getting what they want at home.[Edited on November 7, 2011 at 3:42 PM. Reason : d]

hate to agree but ya, a lot of my working out is to get in good shape and meet someone. Hard to argue with results, since i've gotten in shape, i've received a lot more attention from women. My confidence has gone up considerably and i feel greatbut i have struggled with obesity for a big part of my life, so i have other motives as well. And my father was diabetic (never worked out, ate a lot of junk food), so maintaining my health for long term benefits is also on my mind.based on that article though, that's assuming the relationship is going fine and there's no pressure. I started working out towards the end of a relationship to KEEP someone. Didn't work though. Stuck with the exercise part still, life got better. moved on[Edited on November 7, 2011 at 3:43 PM. I stay in good shape as a constant reminder to my SO that she needs to act right, because there are plenty ladies waiting for her to slip up...

I work out so I won't be the first one to die when the zombies come.
11/7/2011 3:55:07 PM
Rule #1?
11/7/2011 4:04:47 PM
By far one of my biggest motivations are because my 57 year old mom and 66 year old dad are still in better shape than me.
11/7/2011 4:06:23 PM
i think my biggest motivator - thinking about it now - is the fact that i don't want to be having this daily struggle with my weight every day when i'm in my 50s like my mom does :-/
11/7/2011 4:34:09 PM
when im not in a relationship i never work outwhen i am i'm silly competitive with my partner"oh, you wanna run? i bet i can run longer and faster than you can""oh, you're gonna go lift? i'll lift the shit out of some heavy ass things and do it better""oh, you're gonna go on a diet? i'll diet the shit out of it, and let's make a bet on who sticks to it"ok not really, but it seems that way.
11/7/2011 4:53:30 PM
I'm the same way competitively, pshoes. It's a Gemini thing. That said, I love running. Good break from my job.[Edited on November 7, 2011 at 5:06 PM. Reason : J]

I enjoy running and biking. It's a break from my busy work day and it's a very selfish activity. If you're not working out for yourself then I feel like you're missing part of the equation.
11/7/2011 5:00:30 PM
My main push to lose weight was so I could play with my kid. I'll still be young enough when he's in his teen's to keep up with him in just about any activity, but not if I don't stay healthy.
11/7/2011 6:15:52 PM
11/7/2011 6:47:54 PM
I used to think my biggest motivation was someone telling me "you'll be a diabetic by the time you're 21" if I didn't work really hard to get my out of whack body under control... but after taking a hard look on how I have treated my body these past 5 years, even when I did get on a health kick, I don't think I really retained how serious it was. So now, after playing the guessing game and starting to "see the light," I realize I could have tried way harder and I just didn't do it. And now I don't even know where I stand - but I do know diabetes could be knocking on my door any second if I don't commit 100%. And not to mention, my granny had a transient ischemic attack a little under 2 weeks ago due to not controlling her diabetes. That's enough to scare me straight

sam how is your tae kwon do training?sorry if thats not the correct discipline

Ok, half marathon goal complete yesterday, triathlon season over this year.Time to tighten up the diet during this holiday season and hit the weight room.I really want to get my nutrition under wraps. Where do some of you guys get your food choices from? How do you go about making healthier food choices?Any suggestions?
11/7/2011 7:49:52 PM
Which half did you run? I'm running the OBX half this wknd. For food, what types of food do you like? I like to come up with ways to make seemingly naughty foods very good for you. A good rule of thumb is to fill up on tasty veggies and stick with lean meats. Let me know what you like and I can offer some good, healthy recipes.Portion control is key. Also, fresh herbs are your best friend.
11/7/2011 8:07:48 PM
I downloaded this app called streaks and I set up 2 calendars, one for working out and one for eating healthy. I mark off the day when I did one or both of the activities. If I end up having a not so healthy day I can see where I couldn't mark it and know to get back on the wagon the next day. It seems to work for me I also pre-pack my food for the next day so I have no excuses and don't feel swayed.
