There is a free app but it requires root access.
1/14/2011 12:57:12 PM
there's also a patch that piggybacks on the existing verizon app to give you a free hotspot (also requires root). supposed to be comparable speed to the official one, but i haven't tried it[Edited on January 14, 2011 at 12:59 PM. Reason : .]

what's the deal with root access? good idea? bad idea? do you have to know what you are doing? does it void warranties and cause shit to break or what?
1/14/2011 1:39:52 PM
Technically it voids your warranty, and if you do anything with it you have to not be stupid (don't delete unless you know you don't need it etc.), but of course 99% of the time you can just flash back stock and no one will ever know the difference.

I have horrible horrible horrible battery life on my droid x. I've made sure that sync is not frequent, wifi/gps are off, etc but I can't last more than 5 hours. Oh, this phone is just over 2 weeks old so I've been through many full cycles of run down to nothing -> full charge. Ideas? I'm thinking of complaining to verizon (not like itll help)
1/14/2011 2:37:24 PM
Is your signal crap? That's about the only other thing it could be other than a bad battery. Go into About Phone-Battery Use-Cell Standby and look at how long it says without signal. If you you have access to wifi, USE IT. Battery life is considerably better over wifi, just be sure to turn it off when you're going away so it isn't constantly scanning for hot spots when there isn't any around.

swype is hiring for a part-time positionhttp://raleigh.craigslist.org/sof/2157746360.html
1/14/2011 2:53:06 PM
^^and if your signal is fine and using wifi when available doesn't help, try a factory reset before buying a replacement battery.
1/14/2011 3:02:12 PM
^/^x3My phone seemingly only shows battery stats since last unplug...and being that it's currently plugged in I cant see shit. I'm prob going to call and complain to verizon. lolwait...used *#*#4636#*#* to get battery info....running 31.3%screen on 12.3%phone on 2.4%wifi on 6.5%wifi running 6.4%does that info help?[Edited on January 14, 2011 at 4:11 PM. 1/14/2011 4:08:50 PM
Yeah sorry about that, it only works if you use it just before you have to charge it.
1/14/2011 4:23:02 PM
if it's only 2 weeks old, i'd walk into a verizon corporate store and complain about it. chances are they'll just hand you a new battery

Atrix, march 1, $200 probly another $99 for laptop dock. Will be in line day 1.

^I'm assuming that's all still rumors
1/16/2011 7:11:01 PM
i've had my evo for less than 30 days and I am thinking about returning it and getting the new evo shift. the price is exactly the same and the return policy says you have 30 days to return with no penalty. anyone have experience returning phones like this? is there a catch or something i should know about?

I got sick of Android on my HD2 and installed Windows Phone 7. I really can't believe how much faster and more intuitive WP7 is. I can always partition my SD card and reinstall Android to dual-boot, but at this point I'm quite content to stick with WP7 only.If anyone else is rocking Android on the HD2, I would highly recommend giving WP7 a try. I had major connectivity, battery life, contact import and freezing issues with various different versions (2.1, 2.2, 2.3) of Android installed on my SD card and NAND. Now with just the first WP7 port released only a few days ago, the build is incredibly stable, everything works flawlessly and the battery life is much better than I got on any version of Android. ^^ Probably physical keyboard vs. touchscreen.
1/17/2011 10:24:26 AM
People still want physical keyboards? I always thought they were training wheels for the blackberry crowd
1/17/2011 10:58:49 AM
It's OK to flash one ROM over another, correct? Or do I need to wipe the device? Can't find a solid answer in the ROM forums on some of the droid sites.
1/17/2011 11:11:46 AM
Smaller screen, no hdmi out, camera isn't as good^it's better to flash back to stock, but sometimes it's fine to just flash straight over another ROM. just make sure you wipe the data/cache/davlik ]
1/17/2011 11:19:05 AM
Yeah usually it's a good idea to wipe when going between roms from different since stuff can get wonky.
1/17/2011 11:41:17 AM
a lot of times the rom chef will say something about it in their "official thread"
1/17/2011 11:59:21 AM
^Yeah, running Gummy Jar now and just want to try out ApeX. Don't have the cables, etc. I would need here at work if I needed to fix anything drastic. Then again, having a non-working phone might be good for a few hours, lol.
1/17/2011 12:18:16 PM
I like physical keyboard, not just because its eaiser to typer but you can also see the screen while typing.
1/17/2011 12:36:48 PM
I'm not sure it's worth giving up some of the other features that the evo has and the evo shift lacks.
1/17/2011 12:44:10 PM
I'd get the epic if I wanted a physical keyboard even though samsung blows
1/17/2011 1:01:27 PM
I would trade the physical keyboard on my droid1 for a lighter, thinner phone
1/17/2011 1:13:52 PM
i never thought i'd be able to get by without a physical keyboard, but the virtual keyboard on the x is quickly growing on me. i can actually type faster (without swype) just because you don't have the lag time from pressing/depressing a physical key.
1/17/2011 1:54:43 PM
Only good thing about having a keyboard is being able to have the full screen in landscape for remoting into a computer, using terminal emulator or responding to a message.

Where can I find the HTC flip clock widget. Did a google search for it about 2 months ago and found it, can't anymore.
1/17/2011 7:59:26 PM
beautiful widgets? Believe fancy widget was free and did it if they haven't changed it.
1/17/2011 8:20:24 PM
^ what he said. Plus they have several over themes to choose from if you decide to switch it up from that.
1/18/2011 7:16:06 AM
BW > FW, it's worth the $2.50 or whatever...so is ADW EX, holy Shit.
1/18/2011 2:04:29 PM
lolz. The Ally is getting Froyo and Samsung is still shutting the bed.
1/19/2011 11:59:53 AM
aren't the canadians getting froyo? I know one of the canadian carriers with the captivate got froyo
1/19/2011 12:06:37 PM
yeah, I think all of the canadian versions are updated but the US ones are getting the shaft
1/19/2011 12:08:15 PM
possibly a retardedly stupid question butcan you swap out SIM cards in droids if you go out of the country? Same question for iphones...]
1/19/2011 3:12:45 PM
1/19/2011 3:24:26 PM
I guess specifically, if I got a Droid with Verizon and I wanted to be able to go out of the country and swap in a SIM card from that country, the only Droid that would do that would be the Droid 2 Global?
1/19/2011 3:39:06 PM
That and the Droid Pro.
1/19/2011 3:40:39 PM
droid pro has one? didn't know that.you could get your cdma phone reprogrammed or something like that if you're in one of the like 4 third world countries that uses that technology otherwise.
1/19/2011 4:04:44 PM
yup. And bad motorolahttp://www.droid-life.com/2011/01/19/motorola-tells-customer-to-buy-elsewhere-if-they-want-custom-roms/#more-24123
1/19/2011 4:50:59 PM
The Droid 2 Global will allow you to use SIM cards overseas. You need to make sure and get it unlocked locally first however. To do it legally, you can just call Verizon, and if your account is in good standing for six months, they'll give you an unlock code.

a guy here at work just got a droid x, and when you scroll through the apps it's kinda jerky. not smooth scrolling like the iphone. is this normal? he bought a refurbished one.
1/20/2011 1:22:23 PM
blur sucks. Tell him to download ADW or launcher pro from the market instead.
1/20/2011 1:30:02 PM
idk what blur is but i'll pass along that info. thanks
