I assumed our terrible rebound/game rating on ESPN was because our FG% was so high. I went back and looked at our rebounds vs. opponents for each of our games so far to see how frequently we out-rebounded the other team (results below). Looks like we were out-rebounded in 5 of our games. Is this a better way of looking at it rebounding stats, or is there something else that takes away the "you make all your shots" factor?Rebounds per game vs. Opponents39 vs. 33 (Miami OH)33 vs. 34 (Penn St)37 vs. 35 (Mass)27 vs. 42 (OKST) (L)19 vs. 34 (UNCA)30 vs. 22 (Michigan) (L)36 vs. 28 (UConn)28 vs. 27 (Clev St)41 vs. 28 (Norfolk)33 vs. 31 (Stanford)34 vs. 37 (St. Bon)31 vs. 36 (WVU)34 vs. 33 (UNCG)31 vs. 29 (BC)38 vs. 33 (GT)33 vs. 31 (Duke)

Assuming ohio state loses, we will vault to between 10-12 in the AP poll, no doubt about it.

14-15 at best[Edited on January 12, 2013 at 6:16 PM. Reason : H]
1/12/2013 6:16:21 PM
alright we'll see negative nancy
1/12/2013 6:21:33 PM
That Oklahoma state loss really hurt we would likely be top 5 now otherwise.
1/12/2013 6:25:16 PM
UConn beat #17 ND. FWIW
1/12/2013 6:29:31 PM
I was just saying bc we have only one team losing this week that is ahead of us
1/12/2013 6:30:41 PM
1/12/2013 6:33:00 PM
we went 2-0 this week, wins over Georgia Tech and #1 Dukeother top-25 teams who lost games this week:- 21 Cincy lost to 17 Notre Dame- 19 Georgetown lost to unranked Pitt- 12 Illionois lost to 8 Minnesota, and Wisconsin- 24 UNLV lost to 25 New Mexico- 4 Arizona lost to Oregon- 8 Minnesota lost to 5 Indiana- 1 Duke lost to 20 us- 17 Notre Dame lost to UConn- 15 Ohio State plays 2 Michigan tomorrowMinnesota shouldn't drop much, if tOSU loses tomorrow they shouldn't drop much but we should pass them...we should pass Georgetown, Notre Dame, Illinois (2 losses)and we should move up a few spots just based on beating the #1 teamI see us at 13th in the AP on Monday

^^yeah, that's what I was thinking. 13th sounds about right.
1/12/2013 6:53:44 PM
we will get our hype back after beating duke. also, duke beat so many good teams and was undefeated that beating them is going to count a lot. we were top 5 without the osu game and this pretty much cancels that game out. I think we will be 8-12

Awesome win, played nuts out. The Kelly and curry injuries really helped, but CJL, LOgic, and howell were amazing.

So, teams ranked above us that lost this week:Georgetown #19Norte Dame #17San Diego state is currently down #16Illinois (2 losses) #12Missouri currently way down #10Minnesota #8Arizona #4Duke #1I think we are going to move up a bunch in the polls. Hopefully not short lived.

I think the wet floors have less to do with the kids wiping up and more to do with Richard Howell's sweat pools.
1/12/2013 10:31:10 PM
Or the fact that curry fell down over and over for absolutely no reason
1/12/2013 10:52:30 PM
I meant that i thought we would jump bc of their lossI also said that before wisconsin dismantled illinois, etcSo we jump illinois, cincy, ND and potentially OHio St and maybe 1-2 others[Edited on January 12, 2013 at 11:34 PM. Reason : I was just saying there is no way we jump 8-10 spots like te guy was saying]
1/12/2013 11:32:15 PM
posting here just so i wont forget when kenpom gets updated in an hour or two:NCSU: 35th overall, 9th in offense, 166th in defense, 90th in tempo, 61st in luckDUKE: 2nd overall, 8th in offense, 3rd in defense, 110th in tempo, 115th in luck
1/12/2013 11:32:21 PM
Lol
1/12/2013 11:34:15 PM
i doubt they will change all that much. For one it's only one game... but also our offense was already ranked very high and so giving up a lot of points to us won't change duke's defensive rating a ton... also we gave up quite a lot of points so our defensive rating won't rise a ton either.
1/13/2013 1:29:00 AM
we moved up 6 spots face, from 35th to 29thour offense improved from 9th to 7th, and our defense improved from a terrible 166th to a less terrible 161stbut the good news is, we're a better bubble team!Duke's luck plummeted from 116 to 154 though...they really got terrible from this gameour luck skyrocketed from 115 to 54...maybe we're finally a pretty good team?[Edited on January 13, 2013 at 2:06 AM. Reason : doubtful, better tweet pomeroy to decide what my opinion will be]
1/13/2013 2:02:55 AM
We played really well today for sure so that's an encouraging trend. I thought we were pretty underrated by Pomeroy for most of the season until the last few games when we started playing really poorly. Hopefully this win will give us a lot of confidence and we'll start playing hard every night. This team definitely has the potential to be great.

1/13/2013 3:16:45 AM
^ duke is a horrible rebounding team as well.O-reb % has nothing to do with good shooting. It is the percentage of available offensive rebounds that you get. Made shots do not count.
1/13/2013 10:11:27 AM
You guys focus too much on the quantitative, and not enough on the qualitative side of college basketball.
1/13/2013 10:19:55 AM
Qualitative question: Simply because of the position of the defensive players, is it more difficult to get an offensive rebound? Is the defense typically positioned on the inside to give themselves and advantage?
1/13/2013 10:35:46 AM
Well yeah, theoretically the defense should almost always be between the offensive player and the goal, but that's true for every team.I dont think offensive rebounding is a huge problem for us. The high post probably has some effect on our guys not being in great offensive rebounding position and other than Leslie/Howell the rest of our team is fairly allergic to rebounding anyway.Defensive rebounding on the other hand is a huge liability. We can't seem to get any of them. At one point Duke had like twice the offensive rebounds as we had defensive. Thank god howell went nuts in the 2nd half.
1/13/2013 10:39:36 AM
the offensive rebounding has a lot to do with our guards leaking out for the transition game. that will create 2 on 1, 3 on 2, etc.. we also had fingers and hands on rebounds in the 1st half of the Duke game that ended up as Duke 2nd chance baskets. also Duke got several Long rebounds again due to our transition game. Wood and Warren need to pick up on their rebounding and let Purivs and Zo focus on transition.
1/13/2013 11:00:34 AM
Wood isn't capable of rebounding any better than he currently is. Warren might not be either hard to say.Purvis and Zo need to help out on the glass and Leslie needs to stop trying to goaltend every shot and focus on the rebound. We give up so many open looks already that we can't afford not to get rebounds. If howell gets in foul trouble one of these days we could literally lose to anyone with the way we rely on him as our only rebounder.
1/13/2013 11:03:43 AM
Yeah, brown, for being 6' 5" isn't that strong of a rebounder. I mean, he's not terrible, but with his size he should get another 1-2 per game. Warren has got to step up and grab a few more.Leslie absolutely needs to focus less on the come over from the weakside block/goaltend that he loves so much and focus on the glass a little more.
1/13/2013 11:15:32 AM
obviously we're doing something right after beating #1 in the country, so your theorycrafting is basically useless.
1/13/2013 11:22:29 AM
The defensive rebounding is a concern, but its obvious Gott challenged them at halftime, and they manned up in the 2nd half. While they likely won't show that intensity every game this season, its comforting that they would (hopefully) man up come tourney time, when every game is high-stakes.Is there a history of teams burning out at the end of a season, after only playing a 6-man rotation? I mean, foul-trouble is inevitable in some games, and we'll need lewis and/or Vandy. But by the end of the season is there any reason for concern about their stamina/legs - anyone know of any examples in the past?
1/13/2013 11:38:42 AM
kentucky played a six man rotation with a seventh getting 12 minutes per game last year and they won the national title. so there's that.
1/13/2013 11:41:39 AM
The 6 man rotation can be a problem in the NCAA with foul trouble and inconsistent officiating. But they normally let teams bang a little more. I hurts in a 3 or 4 day conf tournament tho. That is if you have 3 or 4 hard fought games. I remember, before expansion, State was in the play in game made it to the final, but didn't have the depth and got crushed. Also Lowe did it one year too. Similar outcome.
1/13/2013 12:00:21 PM
^^^ Really shouldn't be a problem except in cases like ^ mentioned where they're playing 3-4 games in as many daysThe Gainey lead team in '96 had that problem.[Edited on January 13, 2013 at 12:09 PM. Reason : ]
1/13/2013 12:05:02 PM
I hope at some point we are able to catch 10-5 Kentucky Also, one thing that was overlooked because Curry put up point, but I thought Warren did a fantastic job defending him for once. In the second half he was blanketing him even as he was running off Redick style double screens.[Edited on January 13, 2013 at 1:14 PM. Reason : x]
1/13/2013 1:10:54 PM
We should play 34 annd vandy instead of Lewis. I think 34 would be like a slower version of amile. I know he could make a wide open layup. We give up offensive rebounds solely because we give up penetration into the lane and howell/leslie get caught in help and leave their man open.
