i always hate the complaining about the ball. both teams play with the same ball, so it's not like it affects one side worse than another. think the ball keeps taking off? take a little power off of it. you don't have to drill each shot for it to count. it seems like every major tournament, players cry about the ball or the turf, or something superficial, and it just seems petty.aaaaannnd as i'm typing, japan scores another another nicely placed free kick.[Edited on June 24, 2010 at 3:03 PM. hahahahahaha omg I just listened to the Mexican commentator, I wish any English speaking commentators would get that into it. The ESPN dudes are pretty boring.
6/24/2010 3:52:52 PM
hell, i wish the NHL commentators would do it. they get excited, too
6/24/2010 3:59:15 PM
I'd love to hear Chuck Kaiton call the US world cup games.

^^^^I've actually enjoyed most of the commentators for ESPN this time around, especially Ian Darke (who has been at the last 2 US games). But I'd turn to Univision if we still had it (tired of Charter, time for DirecTV).[Edited on June 24, 2010 at 4:07 PM. Reason : ^]

so the matchups tomorrow:brazil vs. portugalivory coast vs. north koreabrazil has advanced, portugal is 2nd right now, up 9 goals on ivory coast, so unless ivory coast runs it up on north korea and brazil decides to lay it on portugal, the brazil/portugal match will only be deciding the order those teams move onchile vs. spainswitzerland vs. hondurasone of the more exciting groups, even honduras still has a reasonable chance of advancing as long as spain loses. i'd love to see any combination of teams advance that aren't spain. i have a feeling if spain manages to make it to the next round, they won't be as half-assed in the tournament as they have been in the group.
6/24/2010 4:32:29 PM
i don't think spain has been bad. they just couldn't score against switzerland. they had their looks, just couldn't get them to fall in. they'll likely advance, and they'll remain dangerous
6/24/2010 4:34:01 PM
An announcer during the Denmark/Japan game made a good point: The only group that has been easily decided going into these last set of games was the so-called "Group of Death."
6/24/2010 4:35:53 PM
you could argue that's because some of the teams died, right?
6/24/2010 4:41:27 PM
north korea is the only team that died, and they took the ivory coast down with 'em.[Edited on June 24, 2010 at 4:47 PM. Reason : ]

Wow at Keisuke Honda Of course his FK was amazing, but I was very impressed by his pass to Okazaki.Damn, it was not easy to wake up at 3:30am.I'm very sleepy now. I'm kinda lucky that my boss is gone to business trip..
6/24/2010 10:20:20 PM
This is funny
6/24/2010 10:50:43 PM
Honda totally impressed me and I will be highly surprised if someone isn't on the phone with CSKA Moscow, as we speak, spinning offers.
6/24/2010 11:25:19 PM
I first remember taking a look at Honda a few weeks ago when someone on here posted a Youtube video of his free kicks, and I was really impressed with the work he did. There was some talk about how it was just poor keeping, but I guess we can see that isn't just the case now. I think it says a lot about the parity in football today when South Korea, Japan, Slovakia, etc. all go through to the next round, and yet France, Italy, and possibly other big names don't.The teams overall may not be up to par with the best European and South American squads, but individually, when you look at some of the individual players, it makes you realize that in a few decades, it's going to be anyone's game. Right now it seems the difference between the top quality teams is not talent, but depth of talent.
6/25/2010 1:24:41 AM
Honda's club, CSKA Moscow, made it to the Champions League quarterfinals this year. I'm not sure if he's talented enough for a more prestigious club like Chelsea or Real Madrid to take a gamble on him.
6/25/2010 2:13:19 AM
I'm not sure how, but I woke up this morning more excited for the match tomorrow than yesterday. I thought my excitement would lull in the 3-day break, but I'll be damned....ready to watch some killer matches today too. God damn I love the World Cup.
6/25/2010 7:30:34 AM
And before we get started theorizing, again here are the groups for today:
