Jvp7800, very cool shots. Once spring comes around, I'm gonna attempt to do nature shots. I think I'm gonna order my 17-40L soon since canon has their rebate thing going on till the middle of this month.

I, too, use the 055XPROB tripod, with a 322RC2 grip ball head. Such a huge upgrade from the crappy plastic tripods I used to use.

Seriously, describe to me in just words what that picture entails? It's a good exercise I learned from my instructor to increase your composition. If you can't describe what your picture is to a blind person, then it's lacking something.

While on the topic of tripods, do you guys have any opinion on a Sunpak Pro 523P Carbon model? http://www.adorama.com/SU523P.htmlI've got a chance to pick up a very slightly used one for cheap. Or should I go ahead and spend the money that I know I should and pick up a Manfrotto 055XPro and a head? I'm having a tough internal debate on this one.
1/4/2009 11:14:28 AM
I don't have any experience with that particular Sunpak tripod, but I did used to use another "Sunpak Pro" tripod as well as a Sunpak flash. Both broke.
1/4/2009 1:27:48 PM
yeah, sunpak tripods are on the bottom of the list at RCC. Induro, Bogen / Manfrotto, Gitzo, Giottos are on the top. I have the Manfrotto 3021Pro tripod, which is renamed the 055xPro, and have no complaints. Anyone who has that tripod all love it and I love mine. It's a bit heavy, but it sturdy as a rock, which is important. Only go with carbon fiber if you plan on hiking/camping and need to save an extra 1-2lbs.Induro is one of those brands that I wasn't really expecting to be on the list, but they are actually pretty good and fairly inexpensive. Specially if you call and ask for student prices, it's like 30-60% off the msrp.

Ronny, you still enjoying the Tokina 116? I'm thinking of ordering one tonight, along with a .6 ND filter and start working on landscapes.
1/4/2009 4:01:26 PM
Good Christ yes. I love it. 11-16 isn't the most versatile lens to keep on the body at all times, but it is certainly a ton of fun and it is built like a tank. I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone, even over the 10-22.
1/4/2009 4:08:37 PM
I just feel that the constant aperture may come in more handy than that extra 1mm on the wide end. Mostly I'm just out to get overall sharpness. Plus, I'll have my Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 to accompany it, so I'll have a nice range.
1/4/2009 4:20:11 PM
After all the reviews I read, it seems as if the Tokina is sharper wide open than the Canon anyway. I heard there are less problems with vignetting and CA as well, but I can't say for certain as I haven't done any head to head tests because I don't really care that much. I've used a 10-22 and it is a gnarly lens, but I'm certainly happy with my decision to get the Tokina instead of it.
1/4/2009 4:23:53 PM
I too was impressed with the 11-16 that Ronny let me borrow. Really really wide. Makes me sad it's a crop lens only.
1/4/2009 5:08:35 PM
That's another thing that slightly nags me. I really want to go with a full frame body one day, but can't afford it right now. The only lens that makes sense to "kind of" suit my wide angle need now on this 1.6 body is the 16-35.. and that's just not in the budget. Buying another aps-c lens just means I'll have to sell it if I upgrade, but at least lenses don't depreciate like cars.I've used my film camera with a 19-35 to take away some of the pain of not owning an ultra wide angle.
1/4/2009 5:16:56 PM
17-40 is a good lens, its only one stop less light, provided you get a good copy. the 16-35 is a great lens but I agree too that it's a bit out of the budget range too. i'd love one too, but I can get away with using an f/4 lens.btw, I'm seeing a lot of 5D's being sold for 1000-1200 range on the used market. Good time to switch to FF.

daaaaaamngot the warning message on my laptop this morning. hard drive is failing. realized most of what i'm losing is pictures. working on backing up now (i was way overdue on this, too)...doesn't seem grim, but i could very well have lost some of my better wildlife shots.at least i've got a lot of edited stuff backed up online, so no matter what, it's not a complete loss.
1/5/2009 8:53:32 PM
I bought 3 of the Lexar 8GB 133x cards on 1/1/09 ($2/ea. AR) and got the email today that they're in a backorder situation.
1/5/2009 11:28:16 PM
Hmmm...I bought three as well. And just realized that even though I completed the order I never got order confirmation in an e-mail.So I just logged into my checking account and saw that there has been no debit.Dammit!
