Agreedbut it sounds to me like he already spoke with UCLA and it didn't work out for whatever reasonso THEN he decided to tweet that he was indeed staying

you've also got to think that Gottfried's family has a say in this too...seems like they've taken a liking to Raleigh. If I'm not mistaken he still has 2 or 3 kids high school age or younger...they're in their prime for not wanting to be moved.I'm glad he's staying...it ensures another year of rebuilding and recruiting w/ one staff. It could be devastating if he left and we had a mass exodus of talent and recruits
3/27/2013 11:54:00 PM
"No Dad, we don't want to live in LA."
3/28/2013 12:50:46 AM
yeah, but lets take his daughter for example, what is she like 20?based on Gott's coaching career:Born in LAMove to Kentucky at age 3 or soMoved to Alabama at age 6 or soMoved to Raleigh at age 17 or soI guess its not like being Larry Brown's daughter and moving every 3-4 years of your life, but theres something to be said for a little stabilityi dunno, i guess i just hope Gott sticks around and am trying to justify it

I missed the part where I was proven wrong?I seriously doubt he was ever contacted about the job, much less offered. At one point, UNC hired their 5th or 6th choice in Doherty...and we know that's a guarantee for a top-5 job. Sometimes the timing is bad and the college basketball world has changed. Coaches at mid-majors now have contracts in the millions (Smart and Stevens)...so moving to a bigger school for bigger money isn't as big a deal as it use to be. Coaches are also getting fired after a couple bad seasons...why leave for that pressure when you can get raises for winning in the first round of the NCAA tourney? So my point still stands....and you're still an idiot if you don't think the UCLA job is one of the best in the country.[Edited on March 28, 2013 at 7:43 AM. Reason : .]
3/28/2013 7:39:09 AM
I'm still not fully convinced Gott isn't going to be skipping town. He certainly didn't say "I'm going to be on the Wolfpack bench next year."I'll feel better when UCLA hires somebody else.
3/28/2013 7:48:47 AM
^^ spot on.Kentucky didn't get their top few picks when DUI Billy was hired and I think people will be in for a rude awakening when K and Roy retire (though UNC is better placed because they have a history of elite coaches succeeding and not just one guy).[Edited on March 28, 2013 at 8:01 AM. Reason : Also UCLA did get their #1 choice with Howland last go]
3/28/2013 8:00:37 AM
^I wouldn't get too carried away. I think Brad Stevens ultimately has his sites set on one of the NC jobs, most likely Duke, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up at either one. Shaka wouldn't be a stretch for UNC considering he's only 3 hours away now. UCLA is just a different animal, and an uphill battle.
3/28/2013 8:11:16 AM
Yeah Stevens at Duke and Shaka at UNC makes a ton of sense. It's also a bit scary to imagine. Both getting it done with lesser talent, can't imagine what they'll do when they have the resources and recruiting brands of Duke and UNC.They just have to hope they don't have a couple of bad years and lose all the hype built up around them before the jobs become available.
3/28/2013 8:18:51 AM
Brad Stevens should stay right where he is...Butler is joining the Catholic 7 "Big East". They'll have plenty of competition on the national stage right there and he's a Golden God there.
3/28/2013 8:48:57 AM
Coaching a mid-major is much more attractive than it once was, mostly because you actually get to work with guys for the full 4 years and not have to constantly rebuild due to guys jumping to the NBA.
3/28/2013 9:27:25 AM
difference between ucla and kentucky, unc, and duke is ucla has had relatively little success since the 1970s when wooden was there. and top players don't care what happened in the 1970s. combine that with alumni expectations that a coach produce the way wooden did and no one wants to deal with that kind of pressure. ucla basketball is notre dame football. its time has come and gone.
3/28/2013 9:29:58 AM
Before Cal Kentucky won in '97, UCLA in '95. UCLA has three FFs the past ten years. Hardly a distant memory and UK recovered just fine after many said the exact same thing. And Notre Dame is an odd thing to bring up given their recruiting and... last year.[Edited on March 28, 2013 at 9:44 AM. Reason : X]
3/28/2013 9:43:41 AM
^^wrong. They won a championship in the mid nineties (95?) and went to three consecutive final fours midway through the 00s. That's still nationally relevant no matter how you slice it.[Edited on March 28, 2013 at 9:45 AM. Reason : ^what he said]
3/28/2013 9:45:05 AM
3/28/2013 9:46:03 AM
^^^last year when they went undefeated with an easy schedule on its way to a national championship game where everyone knew they'd be outmatched in every phase. the point is they used to be a powerhouse, which they clearly no longer are. ucla is the same. they've been surpassed by kentucky, duke, carolina, louisville, syracuse, florida, michigan state, indiana, hell even ohio state.[Edited on March 28, 2013 at 9:50 AM. 3/28/2013 9:50:09 AM
3/28/2013 9:51:27 AM
Lol, Syracuse has one more Final Four in its history than UCLA had under Howland. Just stop..[Edited on March 28, 2013 at 9:57 AM. Reason : Ohio State? Lol why not include VCU and Butler? They made a final four in the past few years]
3/28/2013 9:55:41 AM
well we'll see when they continue to get turned down by top coaches and end up with a coach they weren't even looking at this time sunday.
3/28/2013 9:58:03 AM
Just like UNC did after Guthridge and UK did after Tubby Smith or Bama football did when Shula was hired. It happens and doesn't mean it isn't a top job.
3/28/2013 9:59:37 AM
Keep going APCrook
3/28/2013 10:20:44 AM
just gotta agree to disagree at this point. but i believe the best coaching candidates would take any of the jobs listed above over ucla.
3/28/2013 10:28:02 AM
jesus will you all shut up? Gott is staying, he's still credible, the program is the best its been since Jimmy V, calm down and let the man do his thing.
3/28/2013 10:31:15 AM
Stop lying to yourself. The program is not better than it was in the early 2000s.
3/28/2013 11:20:36 AM
really it came down to not wanting to take his kids out of Broughton
3/28/2013 11:22:09 AM
yes it is... our good players aren't seniors. keep calm & go pack.
3/28/2013 11:22:27 AM

3/28/2013 11:23:07 AM
if dtownral is able to post fake tweets, then pigpen deserves to come back since that's his schtick
3/28/2013 11:29:58 AM
3/28/2013 12:18:22 PM
Even if he did tweet that, it still doesn't say he wants to do it at nc state.
3/28/2013 12:33:05 PM
i really, honestly do not get all of the love for ucla as a job. if i'm a coach what do i want in a job? i want a lot of fans to show up, i want to make a lot of money, i want the town to love the team, it'd be nice if i wasn't instantly on the hot seat, i want a place w/ a lot of local hs talent and i want a place that's easy to recruit to.so ucla hits some of those, but i mean honestly michigan state is a better job (by my standards). for all of the credit that ucla gets for having 11 titles, which is crazy, it's rarely mentioned that they play in a fucking gym, and a gym that doesn't fill up at that. w/ all of the schools out there that actually bother to show up to basketball games, a school where that's not the case can't possibly be a top 5 job.[Edited on March 28, 2013 at 1:31 PM. Reason : i understand that gottfried wants that job and would leave us for it, though. that's okay ]
3/28/2013 1:31:07 PM
3/28/2013 1:35:35 PM
how highly do you regard the southern california job?
3/28/2013 1:41:00 PM
Equal to or less than the NC State job.USC has less tradition than UCLA. Therefore they get the 2nd tier of California recruits after UCLA and Arizona are done with them (or after they've been poached by Duke/UNC).College basketball is 99% recruiting. UCLA/Duke/UNC/UK/IU's of the world basically have their pick. They miss on a few here and there, but they get the top guys. That's why those jobs are the tits. That's about as simple as it gets. You can nitpick with all of your other "factors"...but USC isn't going to get a recruit over UCLA. Just like UNC didn't offer Purvis or Lewis...or like they had a "take it or leave it" offer to Warren.Schools like State and USC can only get back up there with more championships in recent history.
3/28/2013 1:45:33 PM
3/28/2013 3:35:15 PM
i dont get how his statements mean he's staying at State?Sounds to me like he's been told he's a candidate of interest but hasn't been offered while they pursue other options first. Not being a lead candidate for the job he's gotta say stuff like that so it doesn't hurt recruiting or affect players returning decisions negatively.I don't want him to leave right now. Even with this season's trainwreck he's shown he can recruit and I think our program is too fragile right now to lose a coach. A mass defection from Zo, Leslie, Warren, Lewis, and Jevoni could really kill us not to mention the possible loss of recruits and the inroads we've made with future recruits.
3/28/2013 7:19:06 PM
Unfortunately one has to agree with face here. Until the UCLA position is filled nothing is certain.
3/28/2013 7:30:11 PM
If the new coach can keep Jevoni we still have a chance

3/28/2013 7:44:25 PM
Katz is reporting Brad Stevens and UCLA are in negotiations.
3/28/2013 7:45:52 PM
that's a huge hire if true
3/28/2013 7:47:26 PM
He was probably their 5th or 6th choice, right APCrook??
3/28/2013 7:48:34 PM
You know how these things work and he could use it for more money at Butler but the interest is obviously there.
3/28/2013 7:50:20 PM
I can't find anywhere that Katz says they're in negotiations.
