not many things more frustrating than having a 3:1 chip lead with 18 left and finishing 7th.limit tournaments get pretty wacky at the end when the limits are like 4k/8k when the avg. stack is like 20k

I think full tilt was broken earlier, I had 9 all heart flops in a row, what are the odds of that (oh and everytime I flopped at least a pair, but never had a heart)

4/18/2006 4:34:00 AM
You want a suckout?Today in the $2,500 super satellite at the bellagio for the WPT Championship (544 players, 51 seats in the $25k main event awarded)... down to about 75, and player A raises to $5k with blinds at 800/1.6k. An idiot who I'd played with in the tourney at an earlier table proceeds to go all in (he has a HUGE stack of about $80k after picking up monster hand after hand). The first guy calls for his last $15k or so. Player A flips AK, idiot flips KQ. Flop comes AK4!! It's over, right?Nope... turn Q, river Q. Btw, I loved seeing the idiot from this hand who had a huge stack early in the day end up going out 53rd!!On another note, yes, I made the top 51, and won my "seat" today! This just won me cash though as I was already bought into the main event (staked) - this is the first main event I've ever been staked in, and I was already thrilled to play. But the $25,500 win today definitely has me in a good frame of mind for the main event!

thing is people in the room were giving me shit because i was stupid for making the calleven tho it was the right call to make i just got fucked overso pissed because i was about to go to bed being up today and that hand would have made my nightinstead it totally ruined my whole day and after playing for about 6 hours today i basically broke even

First day of WPT Championship today... you get $50k in chips (incredible blind structure)... starts with 50/100 blinds, 90 minute levels, 5 levels per day. So today, our last level was 300/600. Notables at my table: Phil Ivey (in the 6 seat, directly across from me) and Robert Mizrachi (2 seat). I was in the 10. For the first 3 levels, I hovered between 40k and 60k, never falling below 40 or above 60 once the entire time. I was probably playing the tightest of anyone at the table, but it seemed to be working alright for me.My first fairly big pot was the first hand after the 2nd break. I picked up 99 utg, and limped for 200... 3 or 4 limpers followed, and Ivey raised to 2k in late position (big raise after several limpers... and he'd definitely stolen a few pots preflop like this already in the day... i.e., we are NOT putting him on a big hand here). Anyway, I called the 2k - not gonna reraise here, don't want to get involved in a huge pot with 99 at this point in the tourney (or any point, really), and you never know what Ivey's up to. Well, I hit the flop - 3,9,K... two diamonds. I checked, and Ivey bet 4k. Some would argue I should check/raise here, but remember, we are 99% sure Ivey has got absolutely nothing. So I took a shot that he might continue with a bluff on the turn and I just called. Unfortunately my call was enough to stop him. T on the turn, and it went check/check... I bet out 7k after an A hit the river. I'm hoping he's got AQ or AK and won't lay it down there, but odds are, like I figured, he had absolutely nothing, and he mucked pretty quickly. I could check there and hope he bluffs, but a) I expect he's smart enough not to, and b) assuming he doesn't, I have to show my hand, which I'd rather not. So, anyway, now I'm up to 60k, best I've been all day.A few hands later though, I got involved bluffing, and then re-bluffing Mizrachi's raise in a pot when I should've just folded to his raise on the flop. This hand cost me 10k. With a few other small loses, I found myself back down to about 45k pretty quickly. During this time, I also picked up 88, 99, TT, and QQ in about one round around the table, but mucked most of them on the flop after calling a small raise preflop. With the TT, someone had raised with 88, and the flop came A28 (he showed the set after I mucked). And with the QQ, I limped in utg+1, only to find a raise to 1500 and a REraise to 5000 before it got back to me. Needless to say, we quickly mucked the QQ without much thought. But, a few hands later, I picked up 22, again called a small raise preflop, and saw a 267 rainbow flop. Mizrachi, who had raised preflop, fired out 2k. The other caller folded, and I called. It went check/check on the turn, and I led out for 6k on the river (K on turn, 3 on river)... he reluctantly called and mucked when I flipped over my set. So now I was back to about 54k at the 3rd break. In the 4th level (200/400/25 ante), I sunk for a while without playing a hand, or playing one or two small pots where I didn't make it past the flop. I actually got back down to about 42k when the following hand came up to completely turn my day around. Cecilia Nordenstram raised to 1500, and got 2 callers (one in position / one on the small blind)... I then looked down at AK on the bb. Needless to say, with my image, and her relatively small stack of about 15k, I was definitely reraising here. I made it a rather hefty, but understandable for the pot, 6500. Cecilia quickly mucked, but to my surprise, BOTH of her cold-callers called my raise! The flop was a beauty... AK4! The sb checked, and I led out for a relatively weak-looking bet of 6k, hoping to induce a bluff from the first caller who was extremely aggressive. I got my wish - he made it 26k! The next player folded, and with only about 18k left after his raise, I moved all in. He quickly folded. There was no point in just calling there... odds were he was bluffing, but I couldn't give him that card to hit a gutshot or set... his most likely holdings. This is mostly b/c he was in position, and he would DEFINITELY slow down and check the turn after I checked to him (assuming he missed). The only hand I fear is 44, and if he has that, well, my day's over - nothing I can do. So anyway, now I'm up to 83k, and the chip leader at the table!I had two big hands in the last level (300/600)... TT and JJ... both times I just called a preflop raise from an aggressive player, and both times I saw good flops... 455 with TT, and 357 with JJ. In the TT hand, I called the raiser's 5k on the flop, and 15k on the turn. He had position on me, and it went check/check on the river, and I showed the winning hand... again, with a player like this, his most likely holding was A high at best... very prone to contuation bet (bluff) on the flop and turn. With the JJ, I called Ivey's raise from my button, and to my dismay, both blinds called! But after Ivey's 6k bet on the flop, and with him only having about 20k left, I made it 16k... praying neither of the blinds had flopped a straight or set, and definitely ready to call Ivey's all in if he so chose... but when it got back to him, he quickly mucked. At this point I was up to about 110k! In the next to last hand of the day, I limped with 44 utg, another player limped, and Cecilia, on the very short stack, moved all in for 7k. It was folded to me, and I decided to gamble (seeing it was about 1/15th of my stack, and most likely, I was the slight favorite in a race). This turned out to be the case as I hoped when she flipped up A9o. I won the race, and was up to 122k to end the day! I ended the day with the most chips of anyone at the table, even though I just played very tight, solid poker all day.235 players out of about 300 survived the day, and I'm in 21st place out of the 235... well above average. Of course, there are 2 day 1s... the field is estimated at about 610 players total, although the exact totals and prize pool won't be posted until midday wednesday. Day 2 for everyone is thursday, and most likely I'll come in about 45th in chips out of about 450 remaining players. The money is top 100.[Edited on April 19, 2006 at 6:36 AM. Reason : .]

Okay, first of all, we need to all thank Jon for providing our internet poker playing asses with that type of a first-hand update from this world known tourney.Second of all, Jon, chip leader at your table for the day! Nice work, man. As we all know, all you can do in any tourney is play the best possible game you can at your given table and it sounds like you did that today so... great work!Thridly, how the fuck do you remember exactly what all those flops were to be able to recap the hands so perfectly?
4/19/2006 6:55:16 AM
Thank you... and all good poker players can remember an amazing amount of hands in very good detail. The details I provided you with were very small. I could honestly list every hand I limped in with today (maybe forgetting one or two) / called a raise with today (and who raised in each of those), and what hands I raised with - the exact amounts of those raises, and all the action after the flop in each of those hands. Obviously some details will fade over time, but being able to remember those things is EXTREMELY important to winning at poker.

Chad Brown most people know (really nice guy, very experienced on the circuit, but imho not one of the better "name" players)... Shaniac is one of the top internet pros - one of the guys I've been in many big online tourneys with, though I've never played with him in person, so it'll be good to meet him tomorrow. I am NOT looking forward to having him on my left though! He's extremely aggressive... and vvvvvvvvvvvvery good. He's just won a big live tourney recently too ($150k or so for 1st, I think). Alex Prendes is a bit of a name player, but he's so short that he shouldn't be a factor for long. I'm glad to see I'm in the chip lead to start the day at the table, and also, overall, I have to say that I drew a pretty easy table. For instance... what if I got stuck in this table??19 1 Kristy Gazes 50,72519 2 Michael 'The Grinder' Mizrachi 75,82819 3 Leandro Alvarez 53,15019 4 Joe Connor 19,97519 5 Men 'The Master' Nguy en 104,62519 6 Ayhan Alsancak 107,95019 7 Ron Toledo 79,15019 8 Kevin Schaffel 18,37519 9 Mark Seif 167,05019 10 Patrik Antonius 200,375I mean, holy shit! Antonius and Mark Seif some of you might not have heard of, but they are two VERY big names in tournament poker right now... I think most people would ranked them both in the top 20 tourney pros playing right now, if not top 10. And they both have huge stacks... then you also have Men the Master and the freakin' Grinder at the same table, both with above average stacks! That table is just insane. That table will get a lot of attention... but the most attention will DEFINITELY go here:47 1 Mike Matusow 29,05047 2 Gregory Caul 21,52547 3 Cody Naramore 45,10047 4 Rob Hollink 50,30047 5 Mark Mache 25,15047 6 Patrick Pezzin 51,10047 7 Daniel Shiff 68,17547 8 Phil Hellmuth 81,87547 9 James Van Alstyne 86,57547 10 George Hiles 69,000haha, Mike and Phil at the same table this early in the tourney... that would make for good tv![Edited on April 20, 2006 at 5:56 AM. Sorry, just a play money story, not worth you big ballers readingI'll always just screw around with the low limit shit (5/10 table). So, I built my poker stars stack up to about 90k, figured I'd try the 100/200 table. Sit down with 20k. Third hand I get dealt 99. Flop is 397. I'm thinking hell yes, I'll slow play the piss out of this. Throw out a weak value bet trying to get some guys in. Next card, a 5. Comes around, and guy goes in for 11k. I am completely oblivious to the straight, thinking he must have paird up or had pocket 5s or something and tripped up. So I dump my 20k in, and he was holding 64 for the straight. DurAnd fuck, i reload, get AJ, flop AJ9...and fortunately didn't burn another 20k to a fag holding bullets.Back to the pussy limits I go.
