Good race. Bold strategy by the 11 and 18. Really good crowd at Darlington for the cup race. Way more than last year. Front stretch looked to be 99%. Turn 1 and turn 4 were both at 80-85%. Even the backstretch bleachers looked to be over half full, maybe nearing 75%.

yeah, wish they'd ditch a pocono race or one of the lame 1.5 milers for a second race there.

I'll defend Pocono because it's different. The 1.5-milers, yeah.

3 thoughts before we head into Richmond:

1. No one not already with a win or is set to be in without a win now will win Richmond. (famous last words) There's Erik Jones if Truex slips into his car and helmet for the night, Logano, and that's it for realistic straight up win contenders. And with the huge gap from McMurray to Bowyer in points, there's no drama there.
2. If Jimmie Johnson is in contention to win the championship at Homestead, it's a travesty. He has 3 wins on the year over 25 races. Outside of those 3 wins, he's not had a top 5 in the other 22 races, and has 4 top 10s in those 22. I don't know how he is 3rd in the overall points.
3. If Martin Truex Jr. is not in contention to win the championship at Homestead, it's a travesty. This is his season. All discussion about NASCAR this season should begin with him, and go about a half-hour before we discuss anyone else.

i'm cool with one race at pocono. it doesn't deserve two. it does not produce entertaining racing.

i agree with your 3 thoughts. sucks that truex can have such an awesome season and then lose the championship due to a bad run at fucking Homestead, of all places.

makes me think about the 2003 season that got all this playoff shit started. newman won 8 races, but had 7 DNFs. Kenseth wins one and lays down 25 top tens to take the championship.

^^^ Thoughts on Kyle's title after missing something like 12 races?

And Chevy can't wait to get their new nose on the car. I think they are slightly down on hp but are down a lot on front df.

the new composite bodies next year are all the same, right? only difference between manufacturers will be the stickers, i think.

^^ I wasn't a fan.

^ Engines.

So going to Racing Reference and looking at Johnson's year:

Race 4: Phoenix - 9th
Race 7: Texas - win
Race 8: Bristol - win
Race 10: Talladega - 8th
Race 13: Dover - win
Race 15: Michigan - 10th
Race 19: Loudon - 10th

And that's it. The last 12 races of the season over the past 3 months he's had two 10ths as his best finishes. He's not even led a lap since Daytona in early July. And this man is going to be in contention for a title...damn I hate the Chase format.

what's even worse is stenhouse. dude's 18th in points with 2 wins at the crapshoots we call restrictor plate races.

or austin dillon with one fuel mileage win currently 19th in points.

or kasey kahne, 21st in points with a piss-in win at indy because of stupid overtime rules and a setting sun. dude doesn't even have a ride next year, but he's in the post season.

crazy idea for a race 26 LCQ:

the few drivers in top 16 in points and don't have a win, top finisher at Richmond among them gets spot 16 in chase

we don't need any more goofy rules and chase format tweaks

they do need to start DQing instead of awarding these encumbered wins. 2nd place should get the win and playoff points.

I agree on all of them. It's just I don't think anyone believes any of them will be around for long.

Looking at field depth, 16 is way too many.

October's dega engine must go into storage and be used in the pre-season Daytona races next year.

13 engines next year will have the long blocks sealed and must be used in two races. The other 10 races, guess they get a one time use engine.

All backup cars must not have an engine in them until they are pulled from the hauler.

If you go to a backup car at any time in the weekend you start at the back.

sealed short blocks, not long blocks.

maybe this will reduce the ridiculous burnouts. remember when hardly anybody did that and when they did it was regarded as kinda dickish?

my wife is obsessed with blaney and listens to his radio during races. said that after the command to start engines, there was some radio discussion about being careful how they phrase some communications. i guess they have some plans to do the bowyer itchy elbow thing to help the 22 if necessary, but are trying to be a little more covert.

^Agreed!

And for about the 1 millionth time MTJ lost because of a late caution after dominating once again. He was pulling away too. I'm a Ford guy, but he's one of those likable drivers. I hate to see this always happen.

that would be hilarious

my vote would be to add logano to the chase

Even the normally benign follow the provided script media were letting NASCAR have it after the race Saturday night. The two Hamlin wins getting "encumbered", the fake Kenseth yellow (by terms of yellow fakeness, that's one of the fakest I've ever seen), ambulance, and the Cope yellow, which only looks to have been thrown to try and stop Truex from winning, it worked.

They threw a debris caution at Darlington when Truex had a big lead as well. The debris was right in front of me. Little piece of rubber hose or molding of some sort about a foot long that was right up next to the wall.

I guarantee that if the 88 had been leading, they never would've thrown the yellow for Cope.

Pearn tweeted "#sportsentertainment" and he's exactly right.

The owner of Furniture Row Racing, Barney Visser, said earlier today he's already sold the #77 team's charter. (Presumably to the Wood Brothers.) Visser said he believed a lot of charters were going to be for sale.

Indycar season finale this weekend. 5 drivers in contention for the title, with 3 of the 5 pretty much only have to worry about winning and they'll win the championship.

Josef Newgarden, Scott Dixon, and Helio Castroneves all don't have to worry about math. Simon Pagenaud needs a little help, while Will Power needs a lot of help.

Newgarden is the series' future. Dixon is trying to add on to his already very impressive resume. Castroneves is chasing that series title that has eluded him his entire career. And Pagenaud is going for a repeat.

he didn't shred the front tires. don't be a dumbass like the r/nascar turds. sometimes teams just get things figured out and dominate without cheating. ask jimmie and chad.

besides, pushing the boundaries of the rules and outright cheating have always been a part of nascar. it's tradition. we all love the stories like DW blowing his engine as he crosses the finish line in the 1985 Winston, Tim Flock's wooden roll cage, Petty's oversized engine and left side tires on the right side for win number 198, roll cages full of buckshot, helmets made of lead, and all the crazy stuff Smokey Yunick could dream up.

they did bust newman for the leaky tires in 2015, though.
