^^ care to expand?
8/8/2022 12:12:39 AM
I find the movie problematic. It's a 25 year old woman who supposedly doesn't have feelings for a 15 year old boy despite constantly hanging around him, getting jealous when he talks to 15 year old girls, flashes him, etc. Not really sure why this is such a critically acclaimed film, but then again critics love Woody Allen]
8/8/2022 12:52:35 AM
was asking about Nope, since you responded to a post about it
8/8/2022 11:40:48 AM
I'm thinking he misread the comment as"Nope, it's dope" and thought it applied to a different movie
8/8/2022 11:52:31 AM
YeahI have not seen a movie called Nope. It's probably terrible. ]

You and your hating on me. I love it. Give me more.

Licorice Pizza was done well, had a lot of good actors in it (including a lot of quick cameos, like Leo D's dad is a waterbed salesman, and John C. Reilly is in it for a second as Herman Munster).. and the kid is Philip C. Hoffman's son.. But yes, the story was pretty creepy and I just couldn't get over that. I read some about it, apparently it's loosely based on true stories. The kid was based on a child actor who did go on to have a waterbed business and pin ball arcade and once delivered a waterbed to Barbara Streisand's boyfriend and movie producer Jon Peters (Bradley Cooper).

10/3/2022 3:24:03 PM
I was reading Hollywood Reporter, they had an article about it's abysmal weekend at the box office. One of the stars in the article was quoted as basically blaming it on homophobia.I just don't think that many people want to spend 12-15 on a comedy in a movie theater. Rom-coms can wait till Netflix. There's no real value in seeing it on the big screen, other than just seeing it sooner than everyone else. And perhaps there's folks that just don't care about a rom-com between a gay couple? Maybe it just doesn't interest some folks? Is that homophobia?
10/3/2022 4:15:01 PM
comedies are always better when seen in a group/theater setting being surrounded by laughter of complete strangers rulesand yes, it is homophobic if you don’t want to watch a comedy about a gay couple and that’s the reason you don’t want to go[Edited on October 3, 2022 at 4:36 PM. Reason : .]
10/3/2022 4:34:20 PM
maybe its just a bad movie[Edited on October 3, 2022 at 7:41 PM. Reason : TGL liked 2016 ghostbusters too]
10/3/2022 7:40:13 PM
it’s getting great reviews from both critics and audiences fitting that you brought up another movie that the Culture Warriors flipped their shit overalso cool that you’re aware of posts of mine from 3 years before you had an account on here. way to tell on yourself. [Edited on October 3, 2022 at 10:45 PM. Reason : .]
10/3/2022 10:43:44 PM
maybe you just have bad taste.
10/4/2022 7:04:06 AM
what reasons are we allowed to use to not see this movie that doesn't call into question our support of the LGBTQ community?
10/4/2022 8:05:14 AM
That's some bullshit right there - saying someone is homophobic simply because they're not interested in seeing a comedy about a gay couple. I'm not interested in watching Empire. Am I racist too?
10/4/2022 9:16:57 AM
I can't recall a rom-com I've seen in a theater... although I'm sure I have at some point. I don't do theaters very often.
10/4/2022 10:11:28 AM
it’s a comedy produced by Judd Apatow and directed by the same director who directed Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Neighbors and is a lot like those moviesif you’re a fan of Apatow and you’re choosing not to watch it because the cast is LGBTQ and focuses on a gay couple, that is very problematic acting like homophobia is not a reason it didn’t have a good opening weekend is absurd
10/4/2022 10:51:26 AM
im going to call you all "problematic" until you change your minds... this is 2022 after all.one day, when there are real consequences, youll wish you listened to TGL.[Edited on October 4, 2022 at 10:53 AM. Reason : ahahaha he said problematic while i was typing problematic][Edited on October 4, 2022 at 10:53 AM. Reason : no producer who ever made a good movie also made a bad movie]
10/4/2022 10:52:40 AM
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/02/movies/bros-smile-box-office.htmlplenty of reasons it's underperforming besides homophobia.
10/4/2022 11:19:47 AM
"Choosing not to watch something" is a good bit different than just not caring about a movie. I give as much shit about a gay rom-com as I did 20 years or so ago when movies like Failure to Launch were popular.
10/4/2022 1:35:27 PM
you guffawed over homophobia being a valid reason of why the opening box office wasn’t as strong as expected and said “ And perhaps there's folks that just don't care about a rom-com between a gay couple? Maybe it just doesn't interest some folks?”you could’ve left out the “between a gay couple” qualifier, yet you didn’t of course homophobia factored into why it didn’t have a strong opening, especially when considering the strong reviews/audience scores
10/4/2022 1:58:01 PM
well anyway, im more interested in "market failure" as the Times piece put it. while i can certainly understand this movie flopping in certain parts of the country... how did it flop nationwide?do republicans overwhelmingly go to the movie theater?
10/4/2022 2:51:35 PM
I don't have a dog in this fight, but what do user scores/reviews have to do with it?There are plenty of movies with great reviews and scores that I simply have no interest in the genre/premise. By all accounts "Shape of Water" is a great movie, I personally enjoy Guillermo del Toro movies a whole bunch, but I didn't see this one in theaters because it didn't look good to me. When I finally saw it at home, I didn't really enjoy it.I'm sure some people who didn't see this movie are homophobic, but if it had been a straight couple instead, I'm not sure it would have improved performance all that much.
10/4/2022 2:51:50 PM
a good movie is a good movie, and if people won’t go see it because it focuses on a gay couple, that’s a problemit really is as simple as that. if a movie focusing on a straight couple was the exact same level of funny and got good-to-great word of mouth, I think it’s safe to assume that it would do better than Bros has, so far, at least. there’s still a good chance of more people deciding to check it out after opening weekend, but in the context of opening weekend box office results, which is what this whole thing has been about, it’s clear that homophobia played a part in it. to deny that is to deny that homophobia exists
10/4/2022 3:00:02 PM
Is a good movie subjective to the viewer?
10/4/2022 3:08:46 PM
what art isn’t subjective?what’s the point of reviews or making your feelings known about art?to hell with community
10/4/2022 3:11:46 PM
I mean you said "a good movie is a good movie", that implies good is universal.
10/4/2022 3:13:31 PM
way to be pedantic yes, of course I meant that every single person who consumes said product will enjoy and there is no room for disagreement. thank you so much for articulating something that I clearly had a problem conveying.
10/4/2022 3:20:21 PM
Not being pedantic, simply asking you to clarify. How much better do you think this film would have done had it featured a straight couple with equal star power and in this environment (covid, inflation, holiday season coming up, streaming being what it is). To be honest, I can't really even think of an analog to this movie with those caveats. The closest one is the Charlie Day one (I want you back?) but that was direct to streaming because it wouldn't have done well in theaters.
10/4/2022 3:25:12 PM
it being produced by Judd Apatow and heavily pushed by Universal is the reason expectations were higher than the opening proved to bethere is no bad word-of-mouth to point to
10/4/2022 3:30:39 PM
Judd Apatow isn't nearly as popular as he used to be and most people don't care about who produces a movie.I also haven't seen much marketing for this film. You didn't answer my questions though. How much better would this film have performed if it was a straight couple (best guess) and what's the closest analog to this film?
