You can support 2nd amendment rights while at the same time think the NRA is a bunch of fear-mongering douches, right?

The NRA can be. I'm not an NRA member because I don't agree with their political processes nor the amount of money wasted on their bureaucracy.

Yes.

You can also support legislation limiting the sale and ownership of certain weapons without thinking the goverment is trying to take away all firearms.

And you can also own weapons without being a gun nut who owns an arsenal, and who straps a gat to his hip to attend his neighbor's bible study meeting.

No new gun laws during election, wont happen.

If the jokers AR-15 had not jammed the death toll would probably be 30-60 people and injured count in the hundreds (with paralyzed people, life altering brain injuries, spinal injuries, etc) he lost a lot of time emptying the smaller weapons he had and then going back to his car.

"The dreaded 'assault rifle' is used in roughly 0.2% of gun crime. Rifles in general only account for roughly 4% of gun crime. Amusingly, the rifle that prompted this, the AR-15, is most commonly chambered .223, a smaller and weaker cartridge than many commonly accepted hunting rifles use, and is actually less powerful than a good number of common handgun rounds. Simply put, an AR-15 isn't a very dangerous gun, and 'assault rifles' in civilian hands do not exist. In order to be an assault rifle, a gun must be a mid sized cartridge and be fully automatic. These guns are neither.

All of that notwithstanding, I would posit that most in favor of restrictions of 'military grade assault rifles' are simply uninformed, both as to what constitutes a military weapon and what the Right to Bear arms truly means. One need only ask the Libyans, or the Syrians, or the Iranians what their opinion on gun control is. Now, I'm not inclined to believe that the second amendment will need to be evoked in my lifetime or that or my children, but it would be immensely irresponsible to remove the ability of citizenry to defend themselves from a government threat when we cannot accurately predict the economy next week. How can we possibly claim there 'is no need' for these guns in civilian hands? How can we know what our government will be like in 50 years? In 100?

We say it will control crime, but it has been shown to have no effect. The more restrictive gun laws become, the stronger criminals become. France, Canada, Switzerland, and the UK all have dramatically higher rates of rape than America. The UK has passed us in every category of violent crime save gun crime. We do not protect our people when we disarm them. An empowered people is a people capable of enforcing the rule of law. A vast majority of guns are never brought to bear on another human being. These spree shootings are statistical outliers, and in no way indicative of either a problem with guns or a uniquely American problem. Knife massacres in China and terrorist bombings clearly illustrate what can be done without a gun.

The issue of gun violence will not be fixed via legislation, but education."

All Guns are dangerous. I'm sure if the 5.56 NATO was a bitch bullet the military wouldn't use it.

You're grasping at straws. Next argument.

Well, almost anything can be dangerous. And the 5.56 is used by the U.S. and some other nations because it's mostly effective, lighter, and cheaper than the next popular military round, 7.62. Though some users do complain about the 5.56's ineffectiveness at longer distances and other select scenarios.

In reality, the 7.62 is a much more effective round for military use, if you're primary/sole metric is stopping power.

obviously you can kill with it. You can kill with a slingshot. But it's not as good at killing as many other bullets.

The military uses it because it's lightweight, easy to control, and infantry isn't expected to do the majority of killing in war anyway.

Plus there's the theory that a wounded enemy soldier takes 2-3 men out of the battle (one wounded and 1-2 to carry him) while a dead soldier only takes 1.

That theory would be valid excuse but the days of military vs military conflicts are over. Jihadist don't stop to carry their wounded. Just because there are more effect rounds and guns does not mean this gun/round should be sold.

While the number of full scale wars has dropped significantly, and borders are more stable now than ever before I think you'll find that there are still many instances of nation v. nation conflict.

What are Japan's gun laws? Their gun and overall homicide rate is ridiculously low. I know it's a vastly different culture but I'm curious.

A cursory look shows that while they are far more restrictive than I like things such as an all day class, written test and mental examination seem like potentially useful ideas that wouldn't infringe upon our second amendment rights, no?

A ccw permit requires an 8 hour class, written exam, fingerprinting, and examination of mental health records.

This is why Chit Chat sucks. Follow along and you would see that we were not talking about THIS situation. It's a conversation about gun violence in general and why America is so much higher than every wealthy country in the world (I used Japan as an example).

And it's not a conversation about taking guns away either.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't think I needed to be completely serious in a total troll thread. I don't mind having an on topic discussion about guns and gun control (done so many a times) but this thread is just people trolling both sides.
