new Boris...sounds like a mix between shoegaze and J-pop to me.http://whenthesunhitsblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/new-video-boris-party-boy.html

Debating even snatching the new Boris until I hear more tracks. And I've tried really hard to get into the new Explosions in the Sky, but am disappointed for the most part after 3 listens. I guess I should just accept that they'll never make another Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place, and that their sound has just been re-done entirely too much since that got released. I suppose Post Rock can only go so far anyways...eh.So as not to be a complete downer...my top 5 for the year almost 25% of the way through:Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring For My HaloDestroyer - KaputtLykke Li - Wounded RhymesTim Hecker - Ravedeath 1972Smith Westerns - Dye It BlondeAnd I'll retract my statement on the last page regarding Rural Alberta Advantage. After a few more listens, their new one is definitely better, and Tornado '87 is on par with In the Summertime in terms of standout songs...[Edited on March 16, 2011 at 12:27 AM. Reason : herpes]

^ yeh, if forced to choose, I'd say the new RAA is better than the first one. However, it's hard for me to separate them-- they feel like such a cohesive, complimentary work. 'Tornado '87' is definitely a good one, but I've gotta go with 'Goodnight' as the standout track. The chorus guts me:"rushing to the woods where we first felt Godlocked into our veins from the moment when we touchedand someday if you get back together in your heartmaybe we might get back together"

i find myself listening to this song a lot. i don't know. makes me want to dance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_mBOavXTqw

New Strokes LP just arrived. Will report back.
3/18/2011 1:47:44 PM
there's no middle to it
3/18/2011 1:48:21 PM
Maybe three songs I really like. Couple more may be growers. One in particular ("Two Kinds of Happiness") sounds just like a bad Tom Petty deep cut.*sigh*
3/18/2011 3:25:06 PM
^second track and last track (both of which were played on SNL if i remember correctly) are easily my favoritesthe rest of it is passable enough to keep me interested until those tracksoverall, it's better than first impressions but still not up to par with their first two...once you accept the fact that they won't make another Is This It and move on, though, it's not a bad record.
3/18/2011 6:40:29 PM
^ that is exactly how I feel about it
3/18/2011 9:43:00 PM
i never was a fan of The Stokes, and it sounds like i don't need to check this one out either.thanks, TWW
3/20/2011 8:41:52 AM

for anybody interested, schoolkids is having a midnight sale next monday night/tuesday morning for the new radiohead album on CD and LP. if you show up on midnight, any cd or lp comes with a free stanley donwood-designed lithograph that looks really cool.
3/21/2011 5:32:50 PM
Really diggin' the studio version of Cults' "You Know What I Mean." That band is definitely headed for big things.

What's the pop song that Machu Picchu clearly rips off?the riff after the chorusit's really bothering me[Edited on March 22, 2011 at 12:08 AM. Reason : .]
3/22/2011 12:04:56 AM
Junior Senior? that's probably not it but I don't hear the resemblance to anything really
3/22/2011 1:05:22 AM
I can hear the song pretty clearly in my head but not the lyricsI could be wrong but that riff is like exactly the same as the chorus from this song, i think. i feel like it's michael jackson but it's probably not.maybe i'm on crack[Edited on March 22, 2011 at 1:20 AM. Reason : .]

so the jessica lea mayfield record has grown on me, probably because as it warms up i'm more in tune with mood reverbbut i've realized what i really don't like above the productiona good chunk of the lead vocals are over-doubletracked, to try to smooth out the imperfections in her voicebut it's her drawl and the bend on her notes that makes her vocals interesting; smooth that out and she just sounds bored

The Strokes "Angles" is just $3.99 today on Amazon (basically paying for just those 2-3 good songs mentioned above)http://www.amazon.com/Angles-digital-booklet/dp/B004S8NBDI
3/22/2011 8:39:18 AM
i'm going to buy every $3.99 album i see on amazon in hopes that the music industry will decide that $3.99 is a good price for an album.
3/22/2011 12:17:21 PM
Still haven't gotten around to the new Strokes...not too excited to hear it after reading the last couple of pages.Today I'm really digging Crack My Bones by The Shoes. Refreshing to hear something good that makes me want to dance, since the new Cut Copy was godawful...
3/22/2011 5:47:45 PM

Lord I Just Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes by Colin Stetson *probably* just became my favorite song of the year so far.Jazz record with Efrim Menuck getting production credits...pretty much what you'd expect...
3/22/2011 11:10:19 PM
Jack White did it
3/22/2011 11:14:21 PM
^^^Yes, you are my hero.

I liked Julian Casablancas solo album a lot more than Angles. I think I liked Albert Hammond Jr's debut more, too. "Taken For A Fool" is kick ass, though.[Edited on March 23, 2011 at 9:05 PM. Reason : ...]
3/23/2011 9:04:37 PM
both of those albert hammond jr. albums are money.

any love for the new Mountain Goats album???
3/24/2011 9:33:14 AM
tried it.i think mountain goats has joined decemberists in my "im so over this bad" category.couldnt give it a fair shake.
3/24/2011 10:31:35 AM
^^ the mountain goats are one of my favorite bands, but this album doesn't do it for me. too many different styles, too little cohesion, some songs that are terrible. I like a few of the tracks a lot, but this is probably my least favorite of the 'modern era' (i.e., from Tallahassee on) mountain goats records
3/24/2011 2:44:46 PM
new fleet floxes is out there...only 128. been getting a lot of good feedback
3/25/2011 8:02:22 PM

Some of you have probably already seen it...but I just realized yesterday that TVOTR made a video for Will Do. LOVE it!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXLpXu9T7j0
3/26/2011 11:53:36 AM
here's a not great quality Fleet Foxes riphttp://www.mediafire.com/?1i8v625cd4ujmjmmaybe it's just because I overplayed the first album when it came out, but Pecknold's voice is just grating to me now. oh well.[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 3:26 PM. Reason : ]
3/26/2011 2:59:46 PM
there's a decent quality copy of the antlers playing their new album, burst apart, in its entirety at sxsw. sounds like the new album is going to be just as enjoyable as their first.[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 3:32 PM. Reason : ,]

Art Vs. Science - The Experimenthttp://www.mediafire.com/?8c597z82j7sdkt1They're that band with that one song from NBA 2K11, but I checked out a lot of their stuff, and it's pretty good electro-house imoa sample track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t639aVyPnP0
3/26/2011 3:52:02 PM
about halfway through that Fleet Foxes album..... not ready to pass judgement yet. It's not bad, but it's not spectacular. gotta listen to it a few more times i guess.
3/27/2011 12:03:03 AM
yeh, new fleet foxes is good, but i'm not blown away. i'm sure it will get better with repeat listens. it bugs me how much Lorelai sounds like Norwegian Wood and Fourth Time Around
3/27/2011 1:42:32 AM
new TV On The Radio is out therewill listen to it and report back
3/29/2011 6:51:03 PM
Yesssssssss...Listening to the first song now
3/29/2011 11:33:11 PM
Going to have to look at Nine Types Of Light objectively and remind myself that it's pretty much impossible for TVOTR to make another Dear Science...In the meantime...didn't think I'd like this, but I was wrong:
3/30/2011 11:28:36 AM
I, too, was pleasantly surprised by that mixtape from The Weeknd.Digging Nine Types Of Light for the most part, but it's inconsistent and uneven.
3/30/2011 2:32:35 PM
I really wish the new Okkervil River album would leak.... also the new Panda Bearhere is a link to the okkervil river site where you can pre-order a pretty badass (but of course expensive) deluxe edition of I am Very Far http://www.jagjaguwar.com/onesheet.php?cat=JAG185deluxe
3/30/2011 2:35:41 PM
Pleasantly surprised by Weeknd...REALLY digging Wicked Games...one of my favorite tracks of the year immediately. Hooray for drugs and sex as an escape for depression!Jury's still out on Nine Types Of Light. Was really disappointed that Will Do was by far my favorite track...also digging New Cannonball Run and No Future Shock. But for the most part...yeah, really inconsistent. Hoping it'll grow on me once I accept that there will never be another Dear Science.New Fleet Foxes came up today in 320 finally...Favorites of the year are still Tim Hecker and Destroyer. Nothing else even comes close, really...[Edited on March 30, 2011 at 2:52 PM. Reason : herpes]
