My 55+ year old boss just started dressing like a hipster a month or so ago. I love the guy, but seeing a southern, religious, researcher tech nerd try to change his image is really difficult for me.

I just hope I don't fired for constantly giving him shit about it

Has to be the worst ad campaign in the history of ad campaigns. I'm sure the guy makes a lot more than I do, and I'm pretty mad about it.

I hate that sensibly objecting to low-quality over-priced generic chain restaurants gets lumped in exclusively with hipsters now (well foodies do as well, and they're definitely not mutually exclusive).

I'm getting tired of the way this word is being thrown around as an insult lately

First of all, a hipster is someone who hates mainstream ideas/culture and loves things that were cool before they became mainstream. Hipsters tend to be, but aren't always- trend obsessed, pseudointellectuals, weird, nerdy, and artsy-fartsy. They can also be creative, passionate, thoughtful, witty, and pleasant people.

I'm fairly neutral to them, as they are just like any other subgroup of young adults trying to forge an identity in the world. Some are nice people, and some make me want to assault them.

Calling someone a hipster when they aren't as an attempt to insult them is just dumb/lazy taunting. It's like calling a white person a beaner, or a gay person 'sneaky'. It doesn't make any sense.

So folks, feel free to label someone a hipster if, and only if, they are behaving like one. But don't just hurl it as a cheap/lazy insult when somebody annoys you, because it's neither clever, nor offensive

And yes, I realize this sounds like something a hipster would probably write. They sure do love irony.

"How Do You Spell Hipster? It Could Be B-I-N-G-O

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill.—It was bingo night in this Chicago suburb, but the venue wasn't some church hall packed with blue-haired old ladies. Instead, mostly 30-something hipsters sipped $7.50 cups of Pu-erh tea in the cozy confines of Madame ZuZu's, an Art Deco-inspired tea shop.

As Bill Kurtis, a longtime Chicago news anchor, began calling out numbers, the players let out a combination of groans and yelps as they used kiddie animal stampers to mark their sheets. The winner of the first round was Nicole Fiorentino, a 33-year-old with red lips, black hair and black-rimmed glasses, who plays bass in the rock band the Smashing Pumpkins.

Ms. Fiorentino came out to play bingo because "it feels old-timey" and to support Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who owns the tea shop and in February created a monthly bingo night, led each time by a different local celebrity.

Bingo is the latest old-school pastime enjoying a resurgence among young people, along with knitting, bowling and euchre. From the London-based Underground Rebel Bingo Club, which throws wild, impromptu bingo parties around the world, to a version in Philadelphia involving drag queens on roller skates, to "cosmic bingo" played under black light, bingo is crawling out of its recreation-center past.

Bingo equipment makers are reaching out to the new demographic with hand-held, electronic bingo devices and fluorescent bingo paper and daubers that glow in the dark, says Kathy Donnelly, vice president of customer relations at Arrow International, which bills itself as the world's largest manufacturer of bingo supplies. She declined to provide any sales numbers.

Mr. Corgan, the 46-year-old rock star, once famously dated Courtney Love and has sung about suicide and depression in a sometimes harsh, piercing voice. Despite all his rage, he's a big fan of bingo balls bouncing in a cage.

"Our lives at this point are speeding up.....it's so nice to just sit with people and go back to the way things used to be where it really is about being together for an hour and talking smack about stupid stuff," says Mr. Corgan, who also owns a professional wrestling promotion company.

Sarah Ahlberg, a 35-year-old who collects vinyl records and writes letters on fine stationery, attended bingo night at Mr. Corgan's tea shop because the nonprofit animal shelter she works for was the beneficiary of the night's proceeds. "I like old-school things. Bingo is a good way to catch up with friends," she says, explaining that being there brought back memories of going to bingo with her grandfather.

Freddie "Fortune" Sorensen and his childhood friend James "Flames" Gordon are giving bingo a different spin. They came up with the idea of Rebel Bingo, a traveling party that includes DJs, in the basement of a London church in 2009, where they had thrown a party. "We were drunk. We started messing around with a bingo kit we found down there. Things got a bit out of control, and we accidentally invented Rebel Bingo," says Mr. Sorensen.

Since then, the pair have held Rebel Bingo nights at music venues in 35 cities around the world, from Los Angeles to Ibiza. The events draw anywhere from 800 to 2,000 people, usually ranging in age from 21 to 30.

Unlike regular bingo, players don't automatically get a prize when they dab off a line of numbers. "You have to then do battle against other Rebels in various games. Like to win a panda you have to prove you are good at hugs," says Mr. Sorensen, who says he's gotten letters from bingo "traditionalists" who "think we are desecrating their game."

Bingo enjoyed its heyday in the 1960s and 70s, but has been on a long, steady decline ever since. Among other things, as gambling has increasingly moved out of Las Vegas and into Midwestern riverboats, Florida Indian reservations and Colorado mountain towns, there are more chances than ever to play games of chance.

"It's a dying game," and the young people who have been adopting it aren't enough to save it, says Don Plucinski, who sold his Mount Holly, N.J.-based bingo supply distributorship in December after owning it for 29 years.

For some venues that host bingo, though, it has been a game-changer. When the Mississippi Pizza Pub/Atlantis Lounge in Portland, Ore., started hosting Bingo and Bourbon on Monday nights a few months ago, it became a boon for the bar.

"It's totally transformed Mondays from nothing happening to having a full venue and significant sales," says bar manager Nicole Welle.

At Mr. Corgan's tea shop, which also hosts a monthly Scrabble game, winners were promised prizes ranging from a jar of honey from the farm of Mr. Kurtis, the newscaster, to a greeting from him on their voice mail.

During a particularly tense round in which players were vying to create an "X" on their bingo cards, one man yelled out, "I only have one number left on my whole card!"

To ease the tension, Mr. Kurtis made corny non sequiturs between calling numbers. "I was watching where the sun set the other night. And then it dawned on me," he said.

For the final round, Mr. Kurtis said players would have to form the letter "Z" on their cards, in honor of Madame ZuZu's.

"We have a question from the gallery," said Mr. Corgan, who himself was playing, using a tiny orange stamper. "Should it be a straight Z?"

Yes, Mr. Kurtis confirmed, it would have to be a regular letter "Z."

A little while later, Larry Riesberg, a 57-year-old stock-options trader, piped up from the back of the tea shop: "Did you call G-59?"

Mr. Kurtis said that he had.

"Then, Bingo," Mr. Riesberg said. "
